First it was silly, then it got dirty, then it got depressing, then the characters started changing dramatically, then everything went nuts and re-wrote existence into something I didn't find particularly satisfying. meh

My problem with it wasn't understanding it, it was how interesting the whole thing became after I had a reasonable understanding of it. imo: NOT VERY. It had nice music and animation though.

If anything the symbolism was too obvious/easy to figure out and heavy-handed. The "characters started changing dramatically" is where the show starts to go downhill, I think, with the unnecessary backstory episodes. It's like the creator was going along, waiting to write one kind of anime, then halfway through decided to do something completely different. Note: Of course, I am a cynical bastard who can't enjoy something without seeing the flaws in it D: damn you, degree

Have you already watched the 2 movies? They do take a couple of important things out but make up for it with some awesome background artwork porn and a couple new scenes. Aside from that it's pretty much identical to the original series so it's a good alternative to rewatching it. I agree with Saturos the Poe on Penguindrum, it would've been so much better if it just went from silly to depressing and didn't include all that unnecessary 2deep4u symbolism. The whole backstory episodes on the characters just made them so ridiculous that it was hard to take them seriously let alone care about them after that point. Also watched the first ep of Symphogear with Satty last night and found it was way too fast paced and all over the place. It's like they condensed 2-3 episodes of content into 1, switching from "lol slice of life" to "grim dark" every 2 seconds. That being said I still enjoyed it and Tsubasa seems pretty waifu-tier.

I was singing the first OP at work all day today. People who like Penguindrum should explain why they like it, if they want :c get some discussion up in here
