I'm tempted to read the manga as well but judging from what I read after the anime arc, it seems like the story just dissolved into Guts being obsessed with vengeance and fighting demons with an oversized sword. There's probably some interesting characters added in later on, hopefully. Plus I'm butthurt that Griffith isn't getting much attention. Wait a sec, all that stuff with Griffith and the eclipse and stuff is canon? Interesting.

Well there's my mind blow for the day. Considering how everyone was going on about SAO, I was expecting it to be a higher seller, regardless of it's quality as a series. I suppose at the end of the day it's not "popularity", but how many people are willing to actually shell out money for it that determines sales so it's only natural SAO would flop in comparison. Yeah Slash, that's all canon. The entire anime arc is pretty much a huge back story on how Guts and Griffith became enemies, hence why the first episode actually takes place after the end of the series.

Probably to try and get you hooked on the series quicker. I just found the first episode was cheesy and 2dark&edgy4me when taken out of context so it had the reverse effect in my case. The manga actually has quite a bit more before it goes into the whole back story arc and introduces some other characters as well.
