Is it an issue of extra sugary-ness and less substance? I haven't seen many real magical girls shows, (like the kind aimed at young girls) and they don't seem to have much substance, but many girls my age I know seem to like them. Precure is really, really fun. My roommate really thinks so! I will never understand why until I watch an episode I guess.

The fanservice causes me considerable soul pain, but Ilya is my favourite character, so I try to skip it. Well really, as Boyd's sig tells you, I really love the "world" of Prisma Illya, where bonds of friendship and undying loyalty and inner strength still have the capacity to change things in a positive way. It's much more "compassionate" and "companionable" rather than "competitive" (maybe like shounen can be? looking at like, Naruto and DBZ). The "magical girl type"/Kaleido Stick is basically a tool for making emotions/imagination a reality, which is naturally appealing to me. Also it's that mashed in with Fateverse and one of my favourite characters in a world that's not grimdark so she's actually happy, it's pretty hilarious but still with badass moments, and the Install system is a great reimagining of Servants -- and that "using the cards you capture" was my favourite part of Cardcaptors, so it's like that but with Nasu. Basically it resonates with everything I like. :c

It's not funny, though. Every single comedic moment falls flat (at least for me). There are better mahou shoujos that do what you're describing. Hell, what you're describing about "friendship and loyalty and strength" seems like it's the mahou shoujo genre in a nutshell. Sure it's fateverse, but it takes the best things about it (Servants, the interactions between servants, the interactions between servants and masters) and turns them into faceless boss battles. Take all that, combine it with bad fanservice, and a relatively average plot and it's just not good. Not good at all. Anyway, that's my rant. I've been saving that up since I was afraid to tell Boyd I didn't like it.
