Every episode was like "oh crap, there's another angel! Shinji, go out and kick its ass while we sit back and do nothing... Shinji, quit being a wuss" and then the angel gets pwned. Later on, the series got more interesting when it focused less on giant mechs fighting angels and we get stuff like the last angel, the info on Rei, Asuka's backstory, etc. and I'm sure many would disagree but the last 2 episodes were pretty interesting IMO. Also, I enjoy religious symbolism and all but I find they really overdo it to the point of parody with cross-shaped explosions and all that jazz, like seriously guys, there's such thing as too much of something.

I also liked the gradual rise in the minor characters, slowly teasing out a story in the past. But once it just started going straight up acid trip, I started getting irritated again. My hate probably starts again...dunno, the last six episodes, maybe? There was one where Shinji actually took a step forward, character-wise, and then in the next episode he about-faced and went right back to whining. That was the episode, I'm pretty sure.

Spoiler: click to toggle It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. I really like it when so many themes and ideas are condensed into such a concise and short series. The art direction was pretty much the best thing ever, (I saw the bluray version not the original TV one without improvements) so many badass tones and stuff were set by the lighting and scenery and stuff. It was really pretty. I really liked the characters and ending- I know some of you have complained about the characters not getting developed well, but thinking about how they represent concepts and how many of them masquerade as something they aren't - like Sayaka seems like the shounen hero type but is actually a "break the cutie" cutie, and vice versa for Madoka- makes them way cooler. The whole show was sinister, thinking about how each witch became a witch is really interesting. gah I just really liked it. and sets up the safety barriers I liked seeing an action packed show with some shounen-type values (sorta like the BELIEVE IT WITH YORU FRIENDS IN MY SHINING RED FIST HEART OF COURAGE only made more serious and thought-provoking) with an all female cast. feels good bro.

If it weren't for the shameless (and very bizarrely timed) fanservice, the anime otherwise gave a remarkably believable, human-feeling reaction to the zombie apocalypse and the breakdown of society.
