Some parts point to your 'traditional' trackers, while others bits give you hashes/whatever which give you the ability to just kind of poke at the internet with the hopes that a seed is floating out there somewhere.

It helps companies ensure everyone will get them, since someone's internet might be spotty and cut out, ruining a direct download, whereas a torrent is unaffected. And given that there will always be seeders, that's never a concern. Granted, I don't really know the details of torrents, either, only that you basically connect to other people with the file and download it from them, byte by byte, and the program puts it together, like a jigsaw puzzle. It's remarkably convenient for queuing up and leaving, and is considerably safer than direct downloading, in that you can see every file before hand (as opposed to just a .rar or .zip).
