Umineko's anime features a fair bit of Adaptation Decay.

Needless to say, as a result of this many folks who've played the games don't really recommend it.

A fair bit? The anime is absolute shit in comparison to the VN. It has "better" art argubly, but at what cost? >_> arrgh

Well regardless, it would be amazing if you could read the VN. But despite being absolute shit in comparison. The anime does......somewhat.......decently.......sort of.......possibly.......okay no, it fails on every single level....I'm not really making a case for myself, am I?

Granted ALOT of details are left out just to fit it into the more sensationalized medium that is the anime, so these things are to be expected in adaptions.....but even then as a stand alone anime, it's quite masterful and captivating. And for those who do not plan on reading the VN, I would like you to see it.

Tales of Symphonia, on the other hand, is totally Adaptation Distillation. Most people know my hatred for the game stems from Lloyd's annoying, idiotic personality and Kratos being Kratos, but the anime version has me actually liking Lloyd. It cuts out a lot of subplots due to the necessity of fitting everything in, but the story's only changed in the details; the main spirit of the plot is still there. As a note, I've only seen the first five episodes (loading six right now), but so far it seems like this adaptation is on the right track.

On that note, while Draco's opinion is a YMMV, I've heard that fans think that Tales of the Abyss's anime does an excellent job of adapting the game faithfully into anime form. On that note, it's also been licensed for an English release a few days ago, albiet I don't know if it'll be dubbed or not.

Tales of Phantasia also has an OVA, and while the first third of the game is cut (the plot after the first time travel begins at the war of Migard vs Dhaos), it does a good job at adapting what's actually on screen (especially the Snow Means Love part). It's also both dubbed and subbed (but is NOT dubbed as horribly as ToP's GBA version is; the OVA has JYB as Cress, for example). It's four episodes long, so it's easy to watch in one sitting too. It's also pretty easy to understand without having played the game, supposedly (not that I would know, having played the game first).

Also Draco should watch F/SN; it's So Okay It's Average at worse (and this is only to people that have played the superior VNs).

If she'll be reading the visual novel, it's best not to watch it. It has a good few spoilers.

Tales of the Abyss' anime is almost exactly the same as the game plot-wise. A few minor aspects are changed or left out, but it's really faithful. All of you people who don't plan on playing the game(for whatever reason) should totally watch the anime since it's awesome.

Sound the horn and call the cry: "How many of them can we make die?"

I was not aware there was an Abyss anime. Will certainly watch, because I'm incapable of playing the game.

Hmm, for someone who doesn't plan on playing the game, is watching the anime a good idea?

Then yes, it's a good idea. You can appreciate the anime more if you didn't already see how the VN played out (the plot arc with Caster comes to mind). Keep in mind that the anime adopts the Fate route, while also squeezing in some bits of the other two routes as well. When it's sticking to just the Fate route, it's pretty damn accurate. When it's not, well...that's only for like five episodes anyway.

...Just, be prepared to not like Shirou (the hero), as the anime adapts the route where he got the least character development. Of course, once the Unlimited Blade Works movie gets subbed, that opinion can be fixed.

Let's just hope you can put up with the [radio edit]iest Tales protagonist in the series(hell, probably the [radio edit]iest protagonist out of any RPG period)

So, yeah, I actually like how they did Luke.

I suppose I'll watch Phantasia next. I'm on episode 19 of Abyss right now, so I'll be finishing it today.

I watched the beginning of the first episode and felt it boasted a serious atmosphere. It seemed really likable, but I have yet to play the game for a comparison.
