A lot of the best mechas are old as shit (GaoGaiGar is 1997, Gunbuster is 1988, Gundam dates back to 1979) so watching something with animation like TTGL spoils you and makes it harder to enjoy the oldies.

True Name: simplechild	Besides, TTGL isn't primarily known for its mecha designs and tech. It's a gateway to good anime, but it does not hold many of the common tropes you see in mecha anime.

Exactly, which means it isn't a very good introduction to mecha...I'd argue that Code Geass of all things is a better gateway to mecha than TTGL.

That's what I was trying to say. :U Uh, Simple, that applies to the entire super robot subgenre. As in, the subgenre that's been around for forty years and that created what we know as "mecha".
