Madoka's personality traits are being obliviously friendly and a tendency to solve problems by throwing their perceived cause off of a high place. Even her 'specialness' is just an extension of Homura.

Country: #226# True Name: Miral	Spoiler: click to toggle Mami served such a little purpose that she didn't even get three full episodes. She was over and done with in no time. She's suddenly thrown at us, gets loads of forced development right off the bat, and then dies. Madoka has a lot of internal conflict over whether or not she should become a puella magi and in the flashbacks to previous times in episode ten, we see that Madoka is a source of inspiration to Sayaka, Homura, and even Mami when they fought together as magi. You forget that everything that makes Homura interesting is because of Madoka. Madoka's personality was so overwhelming that someone like Homura was willing to devote so much time trying to save her.

She seemed...stoned in the first three episodes. Constantly. >_> And even in the flashbacks, she never really stuck out to me, other than that one point where she went crazy. My order would be Homura > Sayaka > Kyoko > Madoka > Mami. But yeah, I can definitely see Sayaka taking lead for some people. The only reason Homura is top for me is episode 10. Also, I like how Kyoko is dead center in everyone's list.

There's some conflicts over greed, wishes, greedy wishes in the non-primary universes. Madoka's just... generically nice and everyone seems to treat that super-special. The only reason that's something remarkable is because every other character has actual conflicts and imperfections. She's only really a source of inspiration because the writers said she was; it was never really believable to me, nor was it interesting. I attribute Homura's actions more to her intense loyalty as a friend rather than Madoka's generic... niceness. So, I repeat: Homura => Sayaka > Kyouko > Mami > Madoka.

Gate of Babylon Also yeah what Ninja said, I like Mami because of all the side stuff, where she plays a much bigger role since episode 3 doesn't happen in them. She wasn't my favorite until after that; before that I just liked her design/abilities. Spoiler: click to toggle Also the reason why Madoka isn't as interesting is because Homura made her less interesting. As Homura became more badass, she made Madoka weaker by coddling her. Remember, Madoka was the protector originally.
