Jail, for me.

Apparently, it's supposed to be "gaol" here, but... it just makes no sense. And nobody's ever corrected me, so I guess both are fine :D

Sound the horn and call the cry: "How many of them can we make die?"

Yep, it's pronounced about the same, I believe.

In FFTA, they referenced a story about a hero named Gaol, that might be where you've heard it.

(BTW I voted Gaol because it's cool, even though I actually say jail.)

'Gaol' is not the official spelling. It's a chiefly British variant that has fallen from usage more and more as time has gone by, replaced by it's phonetic variation 'jail.'

That said, actually both spellings derive from the same root and one isn't older than the other. They come from Latin cavea, 'cage.'

How did this happen? Two words came to English: Old French jaiole, and Anglo-Norman French gaole pronounced 'gale.' These words fused into Gaol and Jail, pronounced identically, since they meant the same thing and had somewhat similar spelling.

However, the use of the soft 'g' has fallen these days, and a 'j' is preferred to represent the sound. So 'Jail' it is.

Jail. Though it interchanges with prison where I live, no one cares either way.

I was confused at first, because I thought he was referencing that story. =/

Anyway, I voted the same as Squee.

If left blank, your default title currently will be: Phasmatis of Elementum

I am going with jail because I've never heard of gaol until now.

So, this was brought up in History today, and guess what?

American's apparently pronounce it differently.

So just to be sure, you DO pronounce Gaol/Jail as JAY-il

JAY as in Jake

and il as in Ill.

Right?

(edited because I forgot to say right)
