Thursday for me, will probably be buying it as soon as I can. Not sure if I'll dedicate my full attention to it because as pumped as I am, I did promise myself that I'd finish Dragon Age first. Sooo. We'll see! |

I'm having fun with Dragon Age, but I could see why you'd just go "meh" about it. Most of my Aussie friends got tired of it quickly, but my girlfriend has had a lot of fun with it, largely because she loves the characters. I also wanted to do a replay of Mass Effect and make the Shepherd I want to take into the game (since I accidentally made mine hideous unless looked at from the one angle that the character creator shows by default), but I guess I'm out of time. I can do that later no doubt. |

I hate my Shepherd's hair. Both the color, and I wish it was longer. Still, I had meant for him to have brown hair, and it's actually red. Plus, I gave him black stubble. I don't know what I was thinking. Still, it looked good in general. And on Dragon Age, I did like the interaction with the characters. I'm hoping Mass Effect 2 has a system half-way between ME1 and DAO. |

Mass Effect 2 is out, and I have it! I have the Collector's Edition, in fact. It came with a couple of goodies... namely free access to Bioware's DLC network (though I'll have to pay when the new stuff comes out, I just don't have to pay for the privilege), and Collector's Armour and Rifle, which are pretty nifty. Couple that with Dragon Age for some Blood Dragon Armour (which I don't even use), and I'm pretty much set. First things first: It's awesome. Everything I loved about the first game is there, just streamlined into a smoother package. It's not without its tweaks, however. These days it's less like an RPG aside from the level ups and character dialogues and such. The game has taken another step towards third person shooter through and through, but it ends up working out quite nicely. The inventory system has undergone a complete change for the better. Basically, rather than constantly getting several hundred weapons and armours throughout your career which you turn into Omnigel, you just get a handful of weapons and armour as you go, each with their own general stats. You might get a new Assault Rifle, for example, and it does more damage and fires in longer bursts but has wider spread and a smaller clip size. Likewise, armour is (aside from the bonus sets I mentioned) customisable piece by piece. You'll buy the pieces from stores as you go along. Since I mentioned clips, I'll also say that the heat gauge is gone, and we now have ammo. Yes, it's a bit groan worthy, but the ammo is easily replenished in all but the longest firefights so it's not really a big deal. The class powers have been tweaked and made more powerful and interesting, too, so you're never without those. Hell, some of them are downright fun, like the Vanguard (class I'm playing) which allows you to use Biotic Charge to rush at an enemy through obstacles and blast them. Let's see, what else. Well, the Mako is gone, though apparently we'll be getting a Hovertank and appropriate missions in an upcoming DLC. Instead, there's a pretty meh minigame involving scanning planets and gathering minerals that way. If there's a place to land, you'll get dropped via shuttle. The minerals you mine, however, are actually pretty important. Since there's obviously not much diversity in the weapons and armour you can find, you instead get generic "Assault Rifles do +10% damage" upgrades. Some of these are bought in stores, but others are researched on the Normandy. These upgrades are widespread, ranging from gear for individual characters to general across the board upgrades to new features on the ship itself. Basically gives you an incentive to explore the far corners of the galaxy. You do, however, have to buy ship fuel to visit systems that aren't linked to mass relays. Soooo you get something more to spend your credits on. Beyond those, it's the same old run and gun fun we had with the first game. The story is slightly... inferior this time I suppose, at this stage of the game. From the very start you can go to the final mission, much like Lavos in Chrono Trigger, but it's really hard and not recommended unless you do everything else and get all the upgrades. Assuming you do it early or when you're not ready, you might change the ending. Read: Your party members and even Shepherd might die permanently for Mass Effect 3 if you screw up. Either way, the story says "There's something weird going on, go here and check it out. But get your team ready first." There's plenty of sidequests and universe expansions and what not, and the main missions all have their own self-contained plots, but it's not quite as impressive as the first game. This is balanced by, in my opinion, better character development. You have more playable characters and they're all fairly interesting in their own way. Most are new, but a couple return... both of which you can romance, now that I think about it. Either way, I've poured about six or seven hours into it so far and didn't want to stop playing. It's a load of fun. |

You been living under a rock for the last year or two, Crash? Ever since Oblivion came out, DLC has been rather common. For Oblivion you'd get small features and areas and whatnot for a small fee, or get them all at once for a larger fee and treat it like an expansion pack. Actual expansion packs are, these days, handled the same way. It's been like that for Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Dragon Age most notably. Mass Effect is no different, except it may be even nastier because you have to buy into something called the Cerberus Network to get access to most of them. Of course buying in nets you two DLCs straight off the bat (a small zone in the Normandy Crash Site and a team member called Zaaed who is pretty hardcore) and it's included in the Collector's Edition, but still. It's a gip. But in the days of microtransactions and MMOs being the only real reason people use the PC (aside from Team Fortress 2), developers need to find a way of bolstering their cashflow, given the monumental *cost* of developing games in this day and age. Especially ones as impressive and epic as Mass Effect. |

No no no, I'm well aware of DLC and have purchased some for MM9 myself as well as assisting a friend in buying some for RE5 and MGS4. I was remarking about this Cerberus Network you mentioned--based on what you're saying, it sounds like you have to pay to even be able to access the DLC regardless of whether or not you buy any or all of it (though you did say you get some for free). It'd be like Valve suddenly decided to charge 20 bucks to download Steam or something. |

Oh, no, it's completely optional. You don't *have* to buy into the network if you don't want to. But if you do, it (I believe) gives you the character and the area completely for free, so it's just like being any other DLC. Only downside is that you have to buy it like a pre-requisite in a tech tree or something. Well, nonetheless, I continued my rampant storm through the game today. Nothing to really add except that I'm still completely in love. I had a ball with ME1, but there were still parts where it felt a little weak. ME2 has just been go go go from the very start. Only slow part is the mineral scanning process on backwater planets, buuut it's still a lot shorter than the goddamn Mako exploration sessions were. Highly recommended. |

No, you misunderstand the Cerberus Network. Anything you get through it is free. It's basically incentive to buy the game new, and you DO get a free character, and a (small) level. There's gonna be two separate DLC systems. Some will come, totally free, through Cerberus, and you can have it if you are in the network. The other DLC is regular, you pay for it, but you needn't be in the Cerberus Network. Yeah, riding in to protect Bioware. Man, they're my favorite. Of course all the money-grubbing is EA, but still... Anyway, turns out I got it Wednesday, day after release. I though it wasn't even shipped out yet, but it turns out the tracking number on the package was marred, and so not updated. xD Anyway, it's Collector's Edition, and it's beautiful. The only complaint I have with the game is the cover system. It's a lot like Gears of War. I like Gears of War. However, the problem arises when, an inch away from pure space-death, I RUN into cover, and in my frenzy I VAULT and am quickly CUT DOWN. Caps not for emphasis, but merely for my amusement. Also, I'll be a fraction away from death, and I'll be in cover, then for no reason Shep decides to stand up. I'm all like WTF?!?! Sometimes I get down in time, sometimes not. Also, I wanted to change my imported Shep's hair, but it wouldn't let me do anything but use imported or customize, not customize imported. But yeah, I'd be playing right now if my buddy hadn't come over. We're playing MW2, since ME2 isn't multiplayer. Beautiful, beautiful game. Edited by Bane Martius Agni, Jan 29 2010, 08:23 PM.

Are you playing on Xbox or PC? For me on the PC, the sprint and cover buttons are the same (Space), so I tend to just double tap space to vault over the cover and then hold it down to sprint and take cover behind the nearest one. Just don't press the button again until you want to move or relocate and you should be just peachy. Anyway, that Cerberus Network thing makes a whole lot more sense. So for the Network we'd still get things like the content packs for ME1 (Bring Down The Sky and the other one) whereas there'd be extra DLC beyond that which you pay for separately? I'm cool with this. While I'm at it, I'll mention that I've done the first wave of missions and got to the first big encounter with the Collectors. I'm playing a Male Shepherd and I just met up with Ashley, who I romanced in the first game, and she totally [radio edit]ed out. So now I'm debating on whether to stay loyal and not romance any of the options for ME2, or just go "to hell with it" and have Shepherd hit on Tali or Kelly or someone. It's apparently suggested that being unfaithful will lead to bad things for Shepherd in ME3, buuuut that's a way off, so... *shrug* Thoughts? Edited by Delfeir, Jan 30 2010, 01:17 AM.

360. Vault and Sprint and Cover are all the same. I dunno man, I'm wondering that myself. I romanced Liara, and kept Kaiden around. Honestly, I loved both Kaiden and Ashley, unlike most people, but Kaiden's biotics won over Ashley's soldier-ness. *Shrug* I dunno if Kelly is romancable (I know Miranda, and SuZe are, and there was a video I meant not to know about about Tali, so that spoiled me. Kelly, I dunno. I like her though, she's flirty.) But yeah, I dunno man. I think if the character really kind of compels into liking her, then I'd go for it. I'm also just past the first thing with the collectors, and met Kaiden. I figured my Shep and him were pretty good friends, you know? Man, those two scions at the end of the mission were BS! I didn't have any guns good against armor, there were two of 'em, I"m on hardcore, my teammates kept dying, and husks were everywhere! I've decided not to combine SuZe and Grunt anymore. I finally got them to stop dying, ran around the map like a chicken, killed the husks, climbed up onto the catwalk with the medkit, and just blasted them with the particle beam. Then the next little boss thing was tough, but not as much so. I just ran around those two square things as cover. |

I'm just playing on Normal my first time around, will probably do a Renegade playthrough on Intense or Hardcore a while after. Either way, I'm continuing mostly with side missions and explorations and stuff. I'm hooked so bad on this game - I just play it for hours at a time. It's really stepped in to fill the void that quitting WoW left, but I'm not writing as much because of it, soooo need to find a balance. Once the game is finished. Either way, the Scions are really BS, but thankfully I have Heavy Pistols and have since got Warp Ammo so next time I encounter them I'll be more prepared. The Collector Particle Beam is also my heavy weapon of choice. As for Kelly, she's romancable by both males and females apparently. I decided pretty early on that I didn't want to be with SuZe, and I still don't really like Miranda, so that means either go for the hot secretary, seduce the alien with the sexy voice but with a face that I never see, or be an honest and faithful guy for Ash in my first playthrough. They're all very compelling options. If only I was Femshep, then I'd just jump at Garrus and be done with it. Oh well. |

I think Tali/Garrus are hilarious. I honestly don't think they'd have been in there if not for the forums at Bioware. I've got a heavy pistol, but I'm ALWAYS out of bullets man! I don't have warp ammo, either. I'm Vanguard. For me it's up between Kelly and being faithful. I like Tali for the voice, the alien hips(=P) and as a character, but it just doesn't seem realistic, at least not for this character. Miranda is hot (also, lol at judging a game character's looks, but whatever.) but I don't like her. As the game progresses, she's getting better, but not by much. Kelly, I really like for some reason. |

Gotta have some fanservice somewhere. Besides, it wouldn't be quite the same if you couldn't make any of your old characters playable. That would just suck. And if they had to pick two to bring back into active duty, well, Garrus is the most hardcore turian in existence and probably the most badass alien in any sci-fi world ever. Likewise, Tali always struck me as being awesome. If they're only there thanks to the forums, then so be it, I have something to thank the forums for. I didn't find ammo to be too much of a deal, even for the heavy pistol. I usually swap out to my SMG if I get low though. Maybe you find less clips in Hardcore? That's probably the case. Either way, I'm sticking with being faithful this game, I guess. Maybe I'll do a Let's Play the second time around or something though and see where that goes. As for you, if you don't think Tali seems realistic, then go for Kelly. She's fair cool. |

Well, it's done. Spent all my time getting all my characters loyal, upgrading as much as possible, then charged the Omega 4 Relay. Kris Shepherd, Level 26 Vanguard, successfully returning from the suicide mission along with every single party member completely intact. Perfect Paragon finish for when Mass Effect 3 comes out. Now I just have to wait! *sits there and waits* ...It was so good and now it's over! B'awwwwww! Edited by Delfeir, Feb 2 2010, 01:29 AM.

Beat it Monday. Vanguard all the way. Did every loyalty mission, upgraded the ship. Decided to romance Tali. Wouldn't have, but Liara was a total [radio edjt] and even then, I STILL wouldn't have, except that she was really cute how impressed with Shepard she was. I kow that's weird, but whatever. Anyway, I enjoyed the total epicness of the Omega rush, then made a STUPID mistake. I sent Garrus through the vents. My Turian friend, loyal since I met him on the Citadel, met his end with a bullet in his head. I went back and beat it again with an old save, but only for the achievement. I'm carrying my file with Garrus dead over to ME3. After all, the point is to have your choices - and mistakes - be important. I made a mistake. I wussed out and lowered difficulty to normal, all because of the Collector's Ship (which I knew was a trap the whole time, BTW.) I want to play it again, but my bro has been playing now, and I'm trying to get to level 30 first. level 29 now, was 28 after beating the game. Funny story, I played it on Casual when i was getting the "No one left behind" achievement, and by the end of THAT game I was level 29. Weird, huh? I liked playing as Joker. That was pretty sweet. "This is all Joker's fault. What a tool he was. I have to spend all day computing pi because he plugged in the Overlord." |
