So. Why do you watch anime? It's all the same. You get people yelling at each other, you get the same (awful) dialog, you get the same (clumsy) Japanese idea of drama, and you get the same (stupid) humor about how the characters are perverts, or how the characters accidentally look like perverts. Manga I can understand a little. You don't have to sit through the ridiculous faux-tension, nor do you have to hear the porn-quality voice acting (for both English and Japanese versions), and you get a much more bearable dosage of those awful energy-streak backgrounds whenever someone throws a slap. ...But anime? It's like reality TV or something, only with less physical realism. What's the appeal? |

XD I don't see really how it's like reality tv when you've got giant mechas, pirates cursed by fruit and all that. It's not like soaps or something. All the cool kids watch it, anyway! T_T |

'cause it's not all the same. I don't just watch anime because it's anime, I watch anime if I think it stands up to my idea of well-shot movie, good dialogue and plot, and good characters. Same reason I watch anything else. That being said, there's only a few anime I really like. Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Digimon season 1 and 2, and Gintama. |

Do you know the names of the anime that support your opinion? It would allow me to answer your question more effectively and I could possibly recommend you better stuff of the same media. |

A lot of anime sucks for the reasons Fluff listed. Manga generally seems better, probably just because voices and other things are left to the imagination. A lot of background lines and stereotypical anime face things are annoying, so I pretty much read realistic-looking mangas. I find manga more interesting partly because of the artistic value. It's interesting to think about how different panel setups can create different effects, such as time and distance; and how you can create different moods and tones with only ink. A lot of mangas are kind of... cheapened in that aspect when they're adapted to the screen. There's a lot of crappy anime and manga out there though, filled with weird cliches and things. But there's certainly some good stuff as well. LIKE YOTSUBA&!! |

Yeah, a lot of anime does suck for that reason. But then again, 99% of western television sucks, too, and if you take away the humour factor, pretty much every cartoon you ever watched would suck, too. Manga can be just as bad, although there's also some very good manga - ie. Neuro. And there's art in anime too, with different shots and artwork, and Haruhi is a prime example of that. xP |

Yes: every single Japanese-based animation, with the single exception of Spirited Away. Naruto, Rurouni Kenshin, Inuyasha, Naruto, Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, the swarms of -mon shows, the hordes of mecha shows, Code Geass...Jesus, what have I forgotten. |

The only one here I've seen is Digimon, and it's both hilarious and brilliantly drawn (the landscape, that is). Never heard of Spirited Away. Also, watch the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. |

Exactly. Sturgeon's Law. I don't watch all that much Western television or anime, but I do watch more anime than Western television because I've been able to find more stories I like in anime format. Plus, it seems to be easier to find shows with shorter runs in anime than in Western television. Anything more than thirty episodes at the absolute maximum loses my attention.

Dude, there needs to be more Digimon. Old school Digimon, too, not the new crap. >__> Actually, I liked all the Digimon except Savers. Still, I wanna see the original series again. Although, I DO miss season 3. Guillomon(sp?) is just so cool. |

How has Satty not heard of Spirited Away? I don't really watch anime anymore (and the only animes I even watched intently were DBZ, Digimon Adventure 01, and Pokemon, all before I even knew what "anime" was) and I've heard of it. Didn't it win an Academy Award? |

Spirited Away won Best Animated Film in the 2002 Academy Awards.
ಠ_ಠ You know, Hayao Miyazaki has made a bunch more films than just Spirited Away. Like Nausicaa, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, and the most recent one named Ponyo. With the slight exception of Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Rurouni Kenshin, I can agree with you that the others on your list are pure mainstream crap. The kinds of anime I watch do not necessarily fit that category. |

Fluff, the question is, why do we watch anything like this? Why do we play video games in certain veins and genres as opposed to others? Why do we prefer certain types of music over others? The simple answer is that everybody is different in what they find appealing and likable. 95-99% of western television is, to me, garbage. Then again, so is 95-99% of anime. But occasionally, I will find a series that is well-written or interesting enough to appeal to me. Sometimes this'll be western, sometimes this'll be eastern. Sometimes it's a random band or video game that really clicks with me - I'm on a Golden Sun based forum for exactly that reason. I don't watch anime because it's anime. I watch set examples of anime because they are usually well-told and interesting stories with good characters or fun action scenes that end up being a more suitable waste of time than a generic FPS, or some crappy pop band, or some lame TV show. Likewise, I skip a lot of anime because they're exactly that. You find the diamonds in the rough and you enjoy. Or at least, I do. Anime is just another medium. Some will appeal to people more than others. Some will not. Some people will watch anime just because it's Japanese and they're fapping furiously to the culture, some will not. People will be people. |

>_> <_< One of my favorite series is about a middle school student who becomes a shinto kami. And she has to deal with being both a middle schooler and a god. Plus she's really timid and the other major Kami of her friends' shrine wants to be a rock star and sometimes goes out into the world and does rock music. I like Kami-Chu. ^_^ |

Saturos I just want you to know you are a very depraved and sad individual for not knowing what Spirited Away is. or Hayao Miyazaki, in general. And for Hayao, specifically, my favorite of his is Princess Mononoke. WOLVES. YAY WOLVES. But beyond that. I watch anime, typically, because I enjoy the humor, usually I enjoy the art style, the story is interesting(if not always well told) and I usually tend to go for the manga because the story is told just that much more awesomely. But my overall and general reason for doing anything and everything is to alleviate my constant sense of BOREDOM. |

Is it sad that I have watched every single one of those series? Look, besides what Delf and Satty said, I simply watch anime because it entertains me. It helps me take a break of all the stupid things that happen on real life (well, Internet helps, too), an anime with a good plot can keep me on the screen for a lot of time, and the awesomness you see on anime cannot be seen on real life, nor movies. In other words, I watch it for the lulz, and I have watched hundreds of series, maybe I am the person at the temple that has watched the most anime, and really, on real life, no one knows I watch anime, only my brothers. I will continue to increase my list of watched anime. There is really no such thing such as a bad animation, it is just different tastes. I like Haruhi, and I also like Hunter x Hunter, even though a lot of people don't really like those. Besides, you can always learn a japanese word or two by watching tons of anime. Even though that knowledge might be completely useless here >_> |
