Temple of Kraden News: Welcome to the Temple of Kraden! ------ All worshipers may enter the Most Holy Place in single file, reflecting on the bountiful blessing Kraden hath provided unto him or herself since their last visit. Head coverings are not necessary, as true penitence and humility are found within. The Priests and Priestesses of Kraden endeavor to remind all that fresh orange juice is heavily preferred; only whores use frozen.
Greetings, heathen. Perhaps some fortuitous blessing of Kraden's grace hath led you to our humble Temple, or perhaps you are simply curious about this strange and wonderful cult. Should you be willing - and dare to hope - to achieve enlightenment, the door opens before you. Lo! Leave your old life behind! You become a Kradenette.

What we know

General Info

  • Golden Sun: Dark Dawn is an upcoming title for the Nintendo DS (and all variants thereof), announced on the 2nd June 2009 at Nintendo's E3 press conference.
  • It is being developed by Camelot Software Planning, the same company that made the previous two games.
  • Motoi Sakuraba will be returning as producer of the soundtrack.
  • The game features fully 3D graphics both in and out of battle, and utilises both of the DS screens (at least) during certain sequences such as summons.

Release Date

  • Release date has so far only been said to be "Holiday 2010". It is unknown whether this is only a Japan-specific date (or indeed a U.S.-specific one, as it was announced in America by Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo America). Europe and Australia release dates are unknown, but are likely to be after Japan and America.

Storyline

  • The game is set 30 years after the ending of Golden Sun: The Lost Age.
  • The plot seems to revolve around the appearance of mysterious "Psynergy Vortexes, which suck the elemental Psynergy from both the land and power-wielding Adepts alike".
  • The three characters seen in gameplay videos and official artwork are named Matthew, Tyrell and Karis, and are the descendants of the player characters from the first games. Isaac is said to be Matthew's father, but any further details on their parentage (or indeed anything else about them) remains to be seen.
  • Gameplay videos show Matthew as the main protagonist walking around a rebuilt Vale. This appears to be his hometown.
  • The shrinking of the earth that occurred during Alchemy's sealed period has reversed dramatically, with continents growing at rapid rates.
  • Technology appears to have made good strides in the time that has passed - we see telescopes, steam-powered transportation devices, etc.
  • It is unknown whether Alex will be featured, whether as the main antagonist, or in any other role.

Gameplay

  • Gameplay seems similar to the original games, featuring random turn-based battles, and out-of-battle puzzles that involve a lot of hopping.
  • New field psynergies are available, with gameplay demos involving the use of a Fireball field psynergy to burn down objects.
  • In battle, characters no longer auto-defend if their target enemies were downed in the same turn; instead they attack the next available enemy.
  • All the old Djinn will be returning for this game, now each with slightly modified individual forms. It is currently unknown whether there will be any new ones.
  • Similarly, the old summons will be making a return, many of them with revamped forms. It is currently unknown whether the summons revealed in some screenshots are merely significant revamps of previous summons, or whether they are new summons entirely.
  • It seems to no longer be possible to summon a single Djinni set on standby. Setting at least two Djinn will allow one to summon as usual.
  • Movement can be controlled either by using the D-Pad or the touch screen (presumably in a similar way to Phantom Hourglass).
  • It is not known how else the DS' touch screen capabilities will be used. Possibilities include menus, puzzles, out-of-battle psynergy, etc.
  • It is also unknown if the DS' inbuilt microphone will be used (for things like casting whirlwind).
  • Again, it is unknown whether the DSi's camera's will see any use. Given the nature of the game, however, it is difficult to find any purpose it could serve other than novelty.
  • It is not known whether there will be any form of data transfer from the previous games available. It had been suspected that a hypothetical third Golden Sun game would use the DS' GBA slot to easily transfer data from The Lost Age. The presence of "clear data" save files was evidence for this, as clear data was used in Golden Sun to transfer data to TLA. However, due to the fact that GSDS does not feature the same cast, and because the DSi (the latest version of the Nintendo DS, and thus what they aim to sell the most) has no GBA slot, it is unlikely this will be a feature.

Nicely done, Deadbeard, and this'll likely serve us well in the future. The final link was a nice touch, too. *sagenod*

Now... we wait.

GSDS does not feature the same cast

But this wasn't a factor in Final Fantasy Tactic's A2's use of the GBA slot and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, so I don't foresee that being a reason why clear data from GS: TLA couldn't be used through taking advantage of said slot.

Edited in a point about movement.
(Either the D-Pad or touch screen can be used).

From experience programming the DS, I can tell you that the game in the the DS slot has access to all the SRAM in the GBA cart. Therefore, it should be no problem for GSDS to read TLA's clear data. =D

I know that it's possible and that there's still a chance it could happen. I'm just saying that it's becoming increasingly unlikely.
I'd still like to see a feature where actions you took in the originals follow through, though.

The fact they're new characters doesn't make that clear?

Yes, but all you got out of attaching FFTA to FFTA2 was a new clan benefit or whatever the hell the things you use at the beginning of battle are.

If left blank, your default title currently will be: Phasmatis of Elementum

You guys might have already seen this, but this might give us some more clues:

Sound the horn and call the cry: "How many of them can we make die?"

Ah yeah, I saw that before. Seems the Eight Adepts may not be remembered as heroes after all.

That's cool, I always thought that it was a bit optimistic to think that everyone would love them. I mean after all the dire warnings as to the dangers of lighting the lighthouses you'd think there would be some reflection of that in the attitudes people have to the adepts lighting the lighthouses. :)

Yeah, if they were going to do that then they should have made a prequel.

I have a bad feeling about this. >__>

Not to mention that sounds like the opening for FFI and FFV, listening the elements and how they're misbehavin'.

I honestly don't think it'd be that horrible if we had to seal it away again. I think the whole series is one great circle which repeats itself over time. Gotta have alchemy for the world to survive, but after its been around too long the people will destroy it themselves. Alchemy is one big switch they've gotta keep turning on and turning off as needed. Yes, the Wise One trusted Issac and the other eight to keep the world safe but by the look of things they're all long gone. And whether Alex is back and sealing alchemy is the best way to cut his power and defeat him, or whether the world is at war and people are out of control, it sounds like they'll need to seal away the power of alchemy. And if that was the story I honestly wouldn't be disippointed.
