This may or may not be old, but whatever. On the heels of Sonic and the Black Knight's release, this is relavent.

I was going to go to bed after I finished browsing some websites, but then I found this.

Now, to anyone who has ever looked at most of my avatars, or seen me talk about most things that aren't Draco, you would know that I am a Megaman fanboy. Which is true. But look at the Brawl Card in my sig, and you'll see another one of my fandoms: Sonic the Hedgehog. The first game I ever played was Sonic 3. Loved it, and started my love for Sonic and gaming in general. So when I came across this, I had a major WTF moment.

SEGA (of Japan, at least) doesn't care about Sonic anymore. It's just a cash cow that they can keep milking. Isn't Megaman milked too? Yes. But Inafune still loves the blue bomber, and all his frachises. Not the same here with SEGA and Sonic Team.

So Sonic team and Sega screwed up with Sonic’06, one extremely bad Sonic game, and you all jump on their back. When Capcom made Megaman X6, everybody lost faith in Megaman, but when Megaman X8 and up (like Zero or Battle Network) came out, everybody had faith in Megaman again. So when Sonic Unleashed, Sonic’s third best 3D game to SA (DX version too) and SA2 (Battle version), everybody still hates it. I guess First Person Shooters is the lonely genre people like now. Maybe if they followed the 3D adventure titled formulas, it would work.

Now, this a comment from a random user to prove that last point. X6 was the worst Executive Meddling Megaman has been through. Due to Capcom's milking of Zero, X6 came along while Inafune was working on the first Megaman Zero game. This forced him to greatly rewrite the story of Zero 1, including changing the villain to a copy. (The villian of Zero 1 was originally going to be the real X, not Copy X).

And yet Inticreates was still able to save the franchise, despite this fact. Megaman still goes strong today, and while some fans complain about too many sequels or not changing the formula enough, they still remain good games. And Capcom seems to be listening. The current running Megaman series, ZX and Starforce, currently only have two and three games respectively. (Starforce 3 comes out in the US this summer.) But I degress. Sonic is in a far greater danger than Megaman ever was. At least Megaman wasn't abondoned by his creator. Take a look at this, Quoted from Ben Andac, a “Game Evaluator” and an “Admissions and Recruitment Executive” for both Sega Europe and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe:

Quote:

“There’s no doubt that Sonic Team have lost their quality touch. They are worse than talentless: they are without passion. Bored, weary, closed-minded and out of touch with any sense of what makes games good anymore.” Quite simply put, after making so many of them, Sonic Team is tired of Sonic games - something Ben cites as a reason for Yuji Naka’s resignation in 2006.

So yeah. Sonic Team is being forced to do nothing but churn out Sonic games, caring little for the quality. Or maybe they do care. But that doesn't matter. SEGA of Japan is just using Sonic for more money. The franchise is nothing but a tool to satisfy the greedy coporate executes of SEGA of Japan. Just look at this:

Sonic Team was kept external strictly as a sweatshop to milk the Sonic cashcow, assembly-line style. Sega of Japan had intended NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams as a brief rest from the never-ending onslaught of Sonic game after Sonic game.

So there you have it. Regardless of whether or not Sonic Team still cares about Sonic or not, they have little freedom to do what they want. They are justed being forced to do keep making Sonic games. Oh, and to drive that point further home, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams was Executively Meddled into being a Wii game, while it was originally going to run on the PS360.

Now, while reviews were mixed, Unleashed was probably the best 3D Sonic game released in a while. Many of the people who worked on Unleashed came straight of out college. They haven't had their creativity sucked dry yet. Oh, and the 2D Sonics? They've been developed by DIMPS. Not Sonic Team. You can see how the Advance, and to a lesser degree, the Rush series, and rated MUCH higher than the 3D Sonics, going back to Shadow the Hedghog.

So yeah. Basically, SEGA of Japan is killing Sonic alive, but they are going to milk every last penny of it. That being said, discuss, I guess. I'm going to go to sleep now >_>

Hooray for my largest post ever, though. Hopefully that'll make up for some of the spam...

Adachi is not amused.

I could have told you this a while ago. Still, it's nice to see proof... but Sonic has been dead to me for a while now. I love the series, and I'm very fond of the blue hedgehog... and remained so right up until after Sonic Adventure 2. Afterwards, it went downhill, and it remained on the slope. Sonic 06 sucked. Shadow the Hedgehog sucked. Secret Rings had potential but mostly sucked. Unleashed had moments of glory but otherwise sucked. The Black Night is apparently okay but is so far removed from the high-speed Sonic approach that I *like* that I don't want to bother buying it.

I am pining for a true Sonic game, high speed and maybe just 2D, but it's not going to happen. I've given up waiting for it... it's just a cash cow, and has been for too long. They're not going to revive it, ever. I'm kind of glad that there isn't a Jet Grind Radio 3 or Skies of Arcadia 2 in development, because I just... can't trust Sega to do it right.

I've given up on Sonic a long time ago. His games have been getting progressively worse since Sonic Adventure 2. In fact, I would say Sonic Adventure 2 is when Sonic jumped the shark.

I haven't played Unleashed... though I do have the game. I have the Wii version though, so I'm aware I'm missing out on a bunch of daytime stages. It seems fairly pointless to play the watered down version knowing that.

I hate what Sega is doing. They have just been ruining Sonic by forcing Sonic Team to milk the franchise. He is certainly not aging well at all. Sonic is just a pale shadow of the awesomeness that he used to be and it's saddening...

Odyssey, ya see~ Odyssey, ya see~

I'm feeling a little cold right now...

I hate seeing Sega like this. What happened to the company that made great games like Sonic the Hedgehog, Alex Kidd, Space Channel 5 and Super Monkey Ball?

The Rush games were good, and I actually liked Secret Rings quite a bit. Unleashed had great speed sections, but when you overshadow them with the werehog stages, that's just asking for trouble.

Why can't we just have a gimmick free Sonic? I don't care if people yell "IT'S THE SAME AS THE OLD SONIC", cause I WANT more of the old Sonic!

I don't like though how they continously make Sonic games over and over. Sonic Chronicles, Unleashed...okay, no more Sonic games for a whi-oh wait, Sonic and the Black Knight? If they stopped churning out so many games, they could not only rethink the series, but make sequels to other Sega franchises. Though, like Delf said, I don't know if that's entirely a good thing. Cept for Skies, because Overworks pretty much covered Skies and they're still making great games. And there are still many UGA members of Sonic Team that could make another Space Channel 5...

It's worth pointing out that while something like this may or may not have been obvious, confirmation and assumptions are completely different things. Regardless, it's worth mentioning that is is only Sega of Japan. Sega of America and Sega of Europe have done nothing of the sort. Yet SoA and SoE have no authority over SoJ, since that's the worldwide Sega headquarters and it's main office.

I think Caz hit the bullet right on the head. Sonic Adventure 2 was the last Sonic game Sega made that was on their own systems. I assume that Sega stopped caring once the became a third party publisher when the Dreamcast failed. If I'm right, then that marks the downward spiral from Sonic Heroes onward. Which is when most people consider that Sonic started going downhill.

Let's look at Sonic Adventure 2 for a moment here:

I remember that Sega of America did more work on SA2 than they did with most other Sonic games. Among other things, Sega of America was the one who created Rouge the Bat. It's worth mentioning that Rouge and Shadow were the last new characters created before people started complaining that Sega was going overboard with new characters, with the exception of Blaze (more on her later). Which they are.

Now, Shadow's been milked since then, but I don't recall anyone complaining about Shadow while he was still a one shot character. Except that meant that he was so popular, Sonic Team brought him back for Sonic Heroes. Then Sonic Team holds a poll on it's website asking which character fans would want to have their own game. Guess who won? Enter Shadow the Hedgehog.

So, why isn't Blaze the Cat hated as much as the other new characters? She didn't debut in one of Sonic Team's coporated "controlled" games. As such, she hasn't been milked outside of '06, if that. She actually had a purpose other than just to be there.

Why do you think Sonic Chronicles had such good characterization? Bioware developed it. Not Sonic Team. They were fans of the blue hedgehog and were inspired to do him justice. Putting the games problems aside, the writing was excellent.

So, like Caz said, Sonic isn't aging well. Not because he's too old, but because of Sega. The original Sonic the Hedgehog came out in 1991. Mario and Megaman have been here since the 80's, and they still go strong. So basically, like the rest of you said, Sonic's pretty much doomed at this rate.

PS. Don't worry about Skies. Assuming that they ever would make another one, Overworks isn't in a pinch like Sonic Team. I'm sure it would be fine.
