So, I was bored and decided to type a little essay on the First-Person Shooter genre of games, so here it is for your reading pleasure: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The First-Person Shooter genre is one that has grown rapidly over the past decade in the gaming world. In a world where there wasn't much in terms of violence other than Mortal Kombat, the game companies dared to make violence accessible to everyone instead of just to those near an arcade. Since it's really hard to tell what the first game to have the label of "FPS" is, we'll just skip ahead to the good parts: Wolfenstein 3D was id Software's big creation back in 1993, and it was a huge hit. This is where the first gimmicks of the FPS appear, like multiple weapons. Later in the year, id Software introduced us to Doom. Doom was the ultimate contender of the FPS for years after it came out. While it kept the use of sprites in Wolfenstein, Doom was able to make outdoor environments and caverns, despite the fact that it wasn't really 3D. In 1997, one of the most popular shooters appeared not on the PC, but a home console: GoldenEye 007 was released by Rare on the Nintendo 64. Meanwhile, 1998 produced both Rainbow Six, the first tactical shooter, and Half-Life, the first FPS to have a cohesive, linear plot. Although FPS games were on the console as well as the computer, people didn't entirely like the idea. However, in 2001, Microsoft and Bungie changed everyone's opinion on this with Halo, arguably the biggest FPS series on the earth at the moment. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So, there are basically four main locales for the FPS genre: 1: World War II - You will fight the good fight in the 1940's war that changed the world. This is one of the oldest and most played out locales, and is now obnoxious. You will always be an allied soldier, unless there is a multiplayer mode. Why you can not join the Axis side in a story mode is unknown. Furthermore, it will always be on the European side of the war. Very rarely, you may or may not have a section in the Pacific. Series in this locale are Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Brothers in Arms, Battlefield 1942, and Day of Defeat. 2: The Future/Space - Because the future is always in Space, these two go hand-in-hand with each other. You will always be a space marine. This will never change. You will also fight an alien army. This will never change, either. This locale is becoming more popular as we go through the years. Series in this locale are Doom, Halo, Prey, Resistance, Marathon, Dead Space, and Battlefield 2142. 3: Modern - The middle ground between WWII and the Future, this locale is able to adapt depending on the situation, but usually, you will be in the Middle East for some reason. You will most likely be a soldier in the Army. This genre occasionally borrows from the Space locale, so expect zombies and aliens occasionally. Coincidentally, this locale is also home to the most tactical shooters. Series in this locale are Rainbow Six, Half-Life, Team Fortress, Call of Duty 4, America's Army, and Battlefield: Modern Combat. 4: Other - This is where all other FPS games that don't fit in above go. Locales here include Islands (Far Cry, Crysis), The Apocalypse (Fallout 3, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.), and Zombie Land (Left 4 Dead) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
