He who strikes like lightning

Now we all know how these started off with FE 1, which is still the basic trendsetter for all SRPGs. They all have discreet classes with different abilities, you all move a "unit" around in discreet quantized turns, and attack or do things to other units on the map. But beyond that there is endless variations on what can and cannot be.

Broadly defined games falling into the SRPG category come in two types - Grindhavens and battle mash-ups.

Grindhavens take the principles of exp and levels from FE and discreet skills from Shining Force and go off the deep end with them, letting you power up specific characters or skills to your heart's content. Tactics are strictly metagame, you do not have to fight using the differing abilities of classes because you can simply pour them all into one super class which is often powerful enough to solo the game on its own with minimal effort. N1 is famous for these sorts of game. As a rule your interaction is limited to moving units around and pushing A to attack everything in the area.

Battle mash ups take the opposite tack and rely much more on tactical prowess than grinding skill. FE 9 and 10 is actually a Battle mash due to being unable to grind for EXP and having to set skills intelligently, though it's a very small change to the basic class/weapons/terrain bonus setup found in most Grindhavens. These games mess around with the basic FE battle system to give the user much more input in more nuanced fashion, though they often have grind aspects as well. Rondo of Blades with it's "move over enemy units in a row to attack them", Valkyria Chronicles with its "move SRPG then swap for 3rd person", or Dragon Force with its "Use God Game style commands to order a small company, 100 soldiers, around along with ATB style charges for your Company's officer who has all the skills" or my current favorite Yggdra Union with its "line up your army each turn and wear down the enemy's Squad in real time, swinging the balance with item abilities or massive Limit Break style attacks".

Anyways I'm sick of grinding and only pushing one button to make my guy use "Kill everything lvl 2" so I'm partial to games that make me act tactically at least a little bit and give me more input on how individual battles play out. If Valkyria Chronicles comes out for PC, I'm there. Another game that's looking good is Knights in the Nightmare, which is turn based, but real time stuff flies at you during each turn. Don't know more than that, hope it gets localized. Another one is Shining Force feather, which is looking to be Xenosaga style where you input preset attacks tied to different buttons in order and rack up damage to enemies Valkyrie Profile style.

What do you prefer and why?

Edit: Tl:dr, do you like grinding like in Disgaea or personally doing stuff like in Valkyria Chronicles?

Awoo!

Both. Why: 'Cause strategy RPGs are fun. Duh.

I haven't really gotten into Yggdra Union. =/

uh oh

Tactical RPGs. Ironically, I never play FE because I find it too tedious. >_>

Sound the horn and call the cry: "How many of them can we make die?"

I like 'em both the same overall, but differently depending on how I'm feeling. If I have the time and energy to put into actively paying attention to battles, I like Yggdra Union's style better; but if I'm just playing out of boredom, or while doing something else, I like to be able to just say "Go here and do this," and then pay attention to whatever else I'm doing.

That's Just My Style!

I like both
The level grinding of Disgaea can be fun to a certain extent if you like seeing 600k Damage lol

Adachi is not amused.

It's... really hard to say. See, I like SRPGs of both kinds quite a lot, but as of late I've lost my patience for video games and prefer games which I can just pick up and get nearly instant gratification. Games where I can beat the crap out of stuff are more my thing now, and I'm starting to understand just why things like Halo are so popular in my age group and older. And this genre doesn't really offer me that that much, and since I seem to suck at them so much, I've been steering away from them.

I would have to say that I prefer tactics for the most part, though. Grindfests are okay occasionally, but it does get pretty tedious and old after a while. I'm all about figuring out some strategy contently, letting loose with what forces I have, and then watching in agony as one little mistake in my otherwise flawless plan cripples my entire army.
