I consider it in terms of the full game. If the first boss gives you any trouble whatsoever, there is always a Pokemon on hand to fix it for you. If you didn't level Charmander enough to do the damage needed, then you could get a Butterfree. Or one of the Nidorans. Or in Yellow version, Mankey. In Fire Red/Leaf Green, Charmander learned Metal Claw early on anyway so Rock became no issue. The opening gyms just determine the initial speed of passage, not the overall difficulty of the game. And Charmander grows into an absolute killing machine as it grows up, especially compared to how Venusaur or even Blastoise progress. As it is in the third generation. Treecko can take down the first gym easily, but beyond that, it loses usefulness. Bad movesets, average stats, lousy design... not much going for it. Mudkip dominated everything everywhere, and Torchic became incredibly good. So yeah. |
