After a full spring and summer of competition, the SBR felt as though it was time to take the first stab at a tier list for Brawl. Before I post it, let me remind you all of a few important things:

1. Tier placement doesn't necessarily reflect your ability to beat your friends with a specific character. You might beat your friend's Metaknight with Sonic, but that doesn't mean Sonic is top tier. It means you win that matchup against your friend. Tiers are not absolute measurements of match outcomes.

2. Instead of measuring match outcomes, tiers are more a measurement of potential of characters against the rest of the cast in a competitive, 1v1 tournament environment. It shows general strength of a character's abilities in a specific tournament environment. So yes, maybe Yoshi is a beast in teams or Ganon is REALLY good with items turned on... but this list measures somethingd different than those things.

3. This list is based on a combination of tournament result data, extensive discussions with top players and tournament hosts and looking at general trends in play in the current competitive metagame. It took a lot of work on the part of some of the best minds in Smash to compile this list.

4. This list might change with time. It is based on how we perceive the game to be and play it competitively NOW. However, if a replacement for l-canceling is discovered or new tactics cause the game to evolve over time, this list could change. So if you main a character that isn't near the top, keep playing and evolving their game. You might be the one, like Chu Dat's Ice Climbers back in Melee, that cause people's opinions to change.

5. That said, don't give up hope! Just because your character isn't ranked at or near the top, doesn't mean you can't do fantastic things with them with enough talent and effort. We do not publish this list to encourage players to change their main tournament character. If anything, it should serve as a challenge to take the game to the next level.

6. In Smash, any character can win in any matchup if you are smarter and better than your opponents by a wide enough margin. So keep playing to win and work hard to be the best player you can be, regardless of which character you use.

And without further ado, I present to you the official SBR Brawl Tier List (v1.0):

Top
Meta Knight
Snake
King Dedede
Mr. Game & Watch
Falco
R.O.B.

High
Marth
Wario
Lucario
Donkey Kong
Diddy
Pikachu
Ice Climbers
Kirby
Pit
Wolf

Middle
Toon Link
Olimar
Fox
Zelda
Zero Suit Samus
Bowser
Luigi
Peach
Ike
Sheik

Low
Lucas
Ness
Mario
Pokémon Trainer
Samus
Yoshi
Sonic
Jigglypuff
Ganondorf
Link
Captain Falcon

You know what I think? The main reason this tier list actually has no meaning to us wi-fi brawlers is that, with our far different lag-based wi-fi environment, we would warrant a tier list of our own and it'd probably turn out much different from the offline tourney tier list above. :P

Wi-Fi battles throw any and all lists out the freaking window, because of Lag and button delay FTL :P

Ganondork is probably higher in multi. MK probably drops down to high too, his schitck is being the only character fast enough to combo, and with some other dude in there interrupting him all the time it won't work. PT would rise since Ivystool and Chairzard both have nasty large area smashes. (Probably by one rank, but they'd still rise).

I heartily disagree with Ness and Lucas' placement. Anyone to ever VS me in real life without lag tends to place him at God tier with his Up-A (when used effectively of course, you can't just spam it) The general consensus for me is that Pit, Meta Knight, Ness and Lucas, Marth, and Snake are all very high tier. Pit can be gimped easily, but using his up-B the right way makes it hard to gimp him. The compelte mobility is better then some people think.

I can compile a list of support reasons for each character, but I'm tired and have alot of reading to do for class, so meh.

Giraffes are adorable.

Bliss, Mama's boys are down there because of the evil deathgrab. Marth can deathgrab them both and Charizard and Squritle can death grab Ness as well. I'm sure this tier list is for local 1 vs 1, not wifi battles so their up B's are not much of a factor in the tier list. And as far as I know, it is not banned.

Also Ice Climbers would be top because they can chain grab everyone but it's banned due to bad sportsmanship so they are not there.

By "deathgrab," do you mean like the thing DeDeDe can do, where he grabs someone, throws them down, and has enough reach to re-grab immediately?

No, it's where you grab them, pimpslap them, then they break free, whereupopn you immediately grab them again, repeat etc. Unlike a chain throw you never actually 'throw' them. Most chars can immediately sidestep when they get free, but N&L spend about 3 frames suspended until they land, and that's where Marth get's em!

Anyone notice that the Melee tier list got an update for the first time since two years back just a week ago? Check here:

All my favorite Melee characters except Luigi and Captain Falcon are low/bottom tier.

... Awesome!

Yes, well, the things I note about the new SSBM tier list are that Marth and Sheik have managed to sandwich their way back into the top tier in between the space animals, Jigglypuff's up into high tier, and that Mewtwo actually rose a couple spots to be placed above Kirby and Pichu.

Why couldn't Lucas/Ness simply midair dodge once they get out of the deathgrab? o_o I dunno about that particular situation 'cause no one's ever used it on me, but I use midair dodges far more than I use sidestepping....

Well you can't "Air Dodge" on the ground. ALso their "Break away" has a larger frame delay than the person who grabbed them =/

@Hinoa, don't have anything to contribute then STFU and GTFO spammer

@Erik, yeah I just noticed that a couple days ago. What's unfortunate is that list is THE FINAL LIST for Melee unless more people actually want it to keep going, but since a few people found out how to make Brawl = Melee 2.0 in physics through Ocarina...

The problem with shrinking or small fighting game communities (this isn't a real problem that much though) is that tier lists tend to become progressively more individual. One bad dude's main might end up top tier because he dominates half of the 6 tournaments played each year. :P
