The Pokedex states that Arbok has "six confirmed hood patterns" below its head, with "each one apparently indigenous to a different region". Unfortunately it seems they never properly reflected that in the Pokemon RPGs, because Arbok's sprites in them always belong to one of two hood patterns... :annoyed: Nevertheless, throughout the Pokemon cards as of now they seem to have represented three of these supposed "six" variations. Check these out: ![]() Pattern 1: ![]() Pattern 2: ![]() Pattern 3:

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It's true, the hood differences are very subtle, but they do at least seem to vary with region somewhat, though not all that much. |

Well, it looks like it's really just two main hood designs among those sprites... But if there are actually subtle differences among Arbok with the same hood patterns there, it's probably because of how the graphics quality of each gen handled each sprite. |

I would argue for three hood designs in these sprites. |

Well, if you think so... Personally I'd argue that sprites 2 and 3 are the same actual pattern and that the Gold/Silver/Crystal sprite only looks a little different from the Ruby/Sapphire sprite because it's somewhat more primitively pixel-drawn (as in, the developers rushed the graphics job for many of the limited-scale G/S/C-era sprites). Same story with sprites 1, 4, and 5. Hmm... |

The Pokemon Special manga actually goes into more detail about the patterns. According to Agatha it varies more on region to do with anything else, but the pattern and its expression tends to change the abilities of the Arbok to match. Agatha's Arbok was so well trained, however, that she could alter the pattern at a command, essentially meaning her Arbok had a variety of forms. Green and Koga managed to defeat her by inking the Arbok and thus blocking out the patterns... meaning that they have to be visible to have any effect on the creature. Did I mention that the Pokemon Special manga is love? |

I'd say that Pic number One, Pics number 2&3, Pics number 4&5. Those are the groupings. So about threeish designs from the games. |

Nah, 2&3 go together, aye, and so do 4&5. But 1 goes with 4&5. |

Oh sure, nobody listen to me. *pout* Fine. Group A is 1/4/5, Group B is 2/3, as everyone else suggested. |

Right, what Delfeir said. What you'd have to understand is that with the first sprite, that hails from a generation in which the very first Pokemon sprites were drawn rather warped at times (Check out Venusaur's Green version sprite here XDXDXDXDXDXDXDXD). It seems as if people are treating the first pic's pattern's "eyes" as containing "sub-patterns" which make it "different" from the "eyes" in sprites 4 and 5; frankly, I think they only drew them in there like that as an attempt at "shading" them and making them not appear all flat white (since they didn't have the color palette to put in the proper red and yellow colors). |

For me, it has more to do with the pointiness of the features, as well as the colours. The black spots are the key features, obviously, and the fact that they don't show up again on the later games would imply a difference. But was it intentional, is the question. |
