Hi, I'm Hinoa, and for the duration of this thread, we're going to absolutely suck at Dwarf Fortress. Dwarf Fortress is a cool little roguelike-ish game where seven dwarves have to create an outpost and make it successful, or (more likely) die trying. Sounds fun, right? What's making it even more fun is that I've never played this myself. Hilarity should ensue. No, this isn't going to be in the style of the Let's Suck videos. For starters, it's not going to be a video--more of a log, in fact. Also, you get to help out! I will attempt to name each dwarf after a Kradenite. Volunteers are needed. I also need you lot to decide where our new fortress will be located. To aid you, here's a map: ![]() And to help you with that: The huge mountain range is called the Wall of Quiescence. I dunno what that means either. Just at the end of it, there's a bunch of jungles and steppes, and the Swamp of Assembling. Up in the northwest corner are some hills and steppes. To the east of that is the Crazed Jungle of Danger. Going east from there, we hit more steppes until we hit the Ocean of Humor. The south shore of the ocean is mire, and up in the NE corner is the Sorcerous Swamp. South of there, over some hills, is the Swamp of Morning, and south of there are the Praries of Music. By the way, that red ≈ in that general area is called the Frosty Desert, which is strange for such a temperate location. The drink to the south is the Gulf of Watchfulness. The peninsula on the south shore of the gulf contains the Hills of Myth, the Common Swamp, and the Plains of Healing (a cold area). On the west shore of the gulf there's steppes, desert, and forest as you go south. That purple dot you see on the screen marks the Ruthless Tundra. It's haunted. I'm not kidding. In the southwest corner of the screen, you get hills, plains, and forests, most of which are very cold. That light blue ≈ you see is the Sea of Compassion. It is also cold. By now, you should see a pattern: green means forests/hills/plains that I really don't have much to say about. It's like that all the way up the west edge of the map, except for the Feverish Ocean, which is a bunch of ≈s in mostly brown. And is mostly haunted or sinister. At the north end of that, we have the Great Dune, which qualifes as a desert in itself. There's a lot of detail in this map--there's three different zoom levels (the one I showed you was the furthest out) and there's a huge display to the right for all the infomation that the map *can't* show. The question is, where do you want me to set up the fortress? In general, anyway. |

Right in the middle of the water? Um, I don't think my dwarves get scuba gear in this game... |

I tried that game. I do not understand how it works whatsoever, and I play a MUD (which means I'm very much used to seeing letters represent a map). |

Then that makes two of us. Anyway, random map time.![]() I did a bit of additional checking on that particular square, and that place is *flat*. Then again, it is a plain. |
