Alright, I would have had a link to the main site here, but the Blizzard site appears to be broken. Not surprising... the amount of traffic they must be getting is huge. But anyway.

Short Version: Diablo 3 has been announced. Release date is, as typical of Blizzard, "When it's ready".

Long Version, tl;dr incoming:

For a while now, there have been rumours that Blizzard has been preparing to unveil a new game or something shiny at their Worldwide Invitational that was scheduled for this weekend. Last year's Invitational saw the unveiling of Starcraft 2, so it was a pretty good indicator that something was up. And with Starcraft 2 still in development alongside another World of Warcraft expansion, there wasn't much else it was going to be.

Thus, today, we were granted with the unveiling of the long awaited Diablo 3. Vastly improved and updated graphics, reworking of the gameplay to make it far more dynamic and immersive, a big attempt at upping the story and lore of the world of Sanctuary and making it all the better in terms of storytelling, lots of online support for multiplayer... pretty much anything any Diablo fanboy could want.

There's an early teaser and gameplay video up on the website, which I'll link when it comes back up. It looks really, really good and I can't wait to get it.

...

Diablo had better start grinning again, though!

Blizzard is really, really good at tooling games to run on a huge variety of systems. I've never seen a computer that Starcraft 1 and Diablo 1 didn't run on, no matter how bad, and they've promised for all their games to allow low tech compatibility.

Thus, your laptop has a chance. ^_^

EDIT: Thank you for the image, Shad! That was unveiled over the course of a couple of days on the main Blizzard website... although it was retooled to be blue and icy so that everyone would think it was related to the WoW expansion.

Unfortunately, Princek, I doubt that'll be the case. Blizzard tend to unveil their games when they've been in development for a considerable amount of time - Starcraft 2 was shown off officially after *four years* of secret development. A year later and we still don't have an official date, though most people (myself included) speculate within the next 12 months.

For Diablo 3, I couldn't begin to assume how long it would really take. Still, what was shown today was pretty damn nice, just like Starcraft 2. So I can imagine that a lot of hidden development has been going on. Ultimately, though, I doubt the game will be out for at least a year.

Between this and Starcraft 2, I don't think I'll have a future to speak of.

I played Diablo 2 a couple of times, and it was pretty fun. Diablo 3 should be pretty hawt, and I'd definitely consider getting it.

The announcement of Diablo 3 makes me really happy... The last Diablo release was Lord of Destruction back in 2001, so it was QUITE out of date compared to Warcraft and StarCraft. But now it's back up there to re-round out Blizzard's unholy trinity of super-game-series for the modern day and age. =D

Erik. Starcraft: Brood War was released no later than 2000, I forget the exact date. It was in more need of an update.

And the unholy trinity feels a lot more complete, as you say. Though I really hope they do make a Warcraft 4 in the future, not just more WoW updates.

I would also like to see Starcraft Ghost finished one day.

Oh, and Blizzard should try their hand at forming a new super series. It's been a while since they formed another intellectual property like that. Or hey, they could even go back even further and make a new Lost Vikings game! That would rock.

Ahem. Diablo 3. The main site is back up, with a higher quality gameplay demonstration.

I was speaking in the sense that the fact StarCraft 2 is "announced and will soon be out" makes that a franchise that is as good as "nowadays revived". When StarCraft 2 was officially announced as such all those months back it instantly made Diablo seem like the series that's "been left far behind", which is why I love this Diablo 3 news.

But anyway, I'm not too sure if I'd be keen on Blizzard making a fourth super-series... Somehow, a part of me would squeal with delight if I learned that it'd strictly be WarCraft / StarCraft / Diablo for the next 20 years, because I find the development of existing series and fictional worlds to be, dare I say it, fascinating. (Blame my want for a new Golden Sun game for that. :P ) But that's just me. :/

Well, I'd be completely happy if they were to never do anything besides make the unholy trinity further. That said, it never hurts to branch out a little, and I would really like to see if Blizzard, as awesome as they are, has the ability in this day and age to create yet another successful and awesome franchise.

Because really, they haven't created a new one in a decade. There's nothing wrong with that but it seriously wouldn't hurt to try it.
