So, I'm playing FF8 for the first time right about now, was never really into it. However, now that I've started it free of presumptions, I LOVE it! I love junctioning GF's and magic, it actually feelsl like I'm doing something, and, being college bound, the college-type atmosphere of Balamb Garden is interesting. Any other opinions of the game? |

Final Fantasy 8 is, curiously enough, one of the few FF games I haven't finished. Which is odd because I loved it to pieces. The reason I stopped is that for some reason my disks didn't like transferring between 1 and 2, and thus after beating disk 1 I got stuck. That said, I really enjoyed it. The story wasn't bad and the battle system and Junctioning was actually pretty cool. |

I actually got it for christmas this year, but got around to playing it last month. Got to disc three. Turns out that when it was pressed, they forgot to do disc three. No likely the real reason, but seriously, it's a brand-new copy and disc three doesn't work. Meh, I've made this gripe before. Awesome game, though. |

I'd love to play it. I'm quite the fan of the FF games that I've managed to get my hands on, and I've heard all the raves of FFs 7-9 |

My opinions of 7-9. 7- It's all right, if you go in hyped up on all it's praise, your up for a HUGE let-down. Go in sour and embittered against it, you might get a pleasant surprise if you turn it away for an open minded-look. The system is fun, you can get away with only ever using 3 characters you like, and the look and feel of it is somewhat similar to an older FF in some aspects, despite how foreign it also feels. 8 - Completely different and unique, but so fresh and inspired. I admit, from what I've heard the plot sounds like a drug trip, but meh, the gameplay is so fun. Think of it as the FFV of the 3d games. 9 - A complete return to the retro 2d style of games. Just imagine a really powerful 2d FF in 3d, and you have FF9. |

Final Fantasy 9 is my favourite in the series, hands down. Mainly because, unlike a lot of games, the characters really felt alive to me. They had their personality traits, and flaws, and the like, and it all felt interesting and believable. Then the story was good, the retro feel was good, and the gameplay was solid. Great game. Final Fantasy 6 is a close second for all of the above reasons. Final Fantasy 7 has good gameplay and alright story, but the issue I have with it is that the story really doesn't make sense unless you delve quite deeply, it's easy to make mistakes in your delving, and the ending is so abrupt that it's irritating. No closure. But back on topic, I need to go through and clear FF8 sometime. The story is alright from what I've seen but I do hear that it gets pretty trippy. Time Kompression anyone? |

I have yet to play a Final Fantasy game, but I would really like to get my hands on VII and VIII. I'm curious about seven because of all of the hype, and I've heard good things about eight from people, too. Maybe I can find a way to play them on my computer when I'm studying abroad.

X rocks hard also. But not X-2! Steer away from X-2! Do not even THINK about X-2!!! It's worse than The Game! Everytime you think of it, it gets more popular! |

Final Fantasy X-2 was, if you don't take it seriously, fun... for a little while. But the story was bleh, the characterisation made me want to kill myself until I just forced myself to not take anything seriously, and the gameplay steadily became harder and more annoying to the point of frustration. And Draco, I would seriously recommend starting with Final Fantasy 6. That's easily emulated too, SNES and GBA versions alike (I recommend the latter, it's actually a really good port). |

I still haven't played Final Fantasy VIII~X, so I can't say anything definitive of them for the moment, VII is great but in the end, over-rated/10. Oh and Draco, Either V or VI are good for starters. |

The one's I've got are: III - DS port VII - Functioning PlayStation Disc VIII - Almost-Functioning PlayStation Disc X X-2 (Christmas gift, no money wasted on my part.) XII I really want the other ones. I had some emulated, but then I got tired of emulators. I/II are ported, but I haven't bought them...I eagerly await IV, V, VI...I also need IX. And tactics...And... This list could go on for ages. |

This. Though I do own the FF3 remake for DS, but I'm not very far, as I find it at some times to be cool and fun and other times to be MIND NUMBINGLY ANNOYING. Battles every two steps? And in those battles you have to win within two turns or the enemy will have probably killed you? EVERY status ailment seems to stay after battle? WHO THE HELL STAYS BLINDED AFTER BATTLE? I have to buy stockpiles of every healing medicine in order to survive as all these ailments are horribly crippling? Level grinding pretty much being a necessity? And don't even get me started on MP or whatever it's called. Why only have a finite number of items that can restore your magic in the game? LET ME BUY STUFF DAMMIT! Still, at other times it can be good fun. |

I must share opinions. Draco, 6 is a GREAT starting point to go at 7 is good, but it CANNOT live up to so much hype. From what I understand, 8's storyline is equal to a drug-induced coma. And Squall tends to be an unlikable jerk for a good deal of the game, but I don't really mind, because the game is fun. |

Don't judge the storyline of 8 until you've really played it for yourself. It all makes sense when you're playing it, it's only when you look back on it or haven't played it and are hearing basic descriptions that your head starts to spin. And now I'm going to go through every game in the series that I've played, and my thoughts on it. tl;dr incoming, but I'll summarise at the end. Final Fantasy 1: Old, basic, reasonably entertaining. Grab one of the ports for cheap. Minimal basic story, old school RPG system. Final Fantasy 2: Unusual system even for this day and age, which isn't necessarily great but is still pretty cool. Slightly improved story, also ported for multiple systems and not bad. Comes bundled with FF1 if you get the GBA version. Final Fantasy 3: Got it on DS, which is a far superior version. At times the system is annoying as Deadbeard puts it, but it's a fairly solid and likable game. Also the first iteration of the changeable job system. Story is meh. Final Fantasy 4: This is the gaming embodiment of a soap opera. First real RPG attempt to give characters deep personalities, relationships, and stories. Very good, reasonably moving, but the system was something of a stepback and is fairly generic as far as FF games go. Also, AVOID THE GBA PORT AT ALL COSTS. Really, really bad port. Final Fantasy 5: The next step in the job system, and one of my favourites in that regard. Very customisable and enjoyable battle system, and much of the later parts of the game are free-roaming and open-ended, which is an original and nice touch. Reasonably good story, recommended by Delfy. Second best to start with. Final Fantasy 6: Combines the soap opera of FF4 with a customisable system first seen in FF5 to create, arguably, THE BEST Final Fantasy game (and perhaps RPG) ever. Great great great story, varied and entertaining system, and Kefka is effing awesome win godsauce. A must play and definitely the best to start with. Final Fantasy 7: There is simply too much hype for this game now, and it really suffers. Worse still is because the hype is over the graphics (first 3D RPG ever), and the fact that it's the first mainstream RPG ever. That said, to those who can put that aside, it's actually pretty good. The story is okay though a little confusing and iffy in some places, the gameplay is entertaining and fun, but the characters leave a little to be desired (only a handful of them have any personality). And Sephiroth has nothing on Kefka. Should be played just to be experienced by everyone these days, though. Final Fantasy 8: Enjoyable though easy to break system, and the storyline is pretty good - characters have personalities and set standards and relationships, though at times it seems forced and changes occur a little suddenly. Still, it works out. Worth a look. Final Fantasy 9: Stepped away from the high technology worlds of 6 through 8 to be a more fantasy game, and REALLY works as a result. Characterisation is great - best in the series. Storyline is really good, and the gameplay makes for a good time. My personal favourite in the series, though not everyone shares my views, naturally. Definitely worth looking at and trying. Final Fantasy 10: Haven't played enough to give a full review, but for the most part it's a good solid game. Gameplay is good even if the sphere grid irks at times, storyline isn't bad, and the characters are at times iffy but usually okay. However, to me at least, it kinda just falls short of the previous four. By no means bad, but not spectacular. It goes for cheap if you have a PS2. Final Fantasy 10-2: I hate Tetsuya Nomura. It needs to be said. Freaking hate the man. The characterisation in this game is terrible, a huge stepback from everything that was established in 10, and the storyline... no. Just, no. However, I did find the gameplay and system reasonably enjoyable for a time, but it does get old and highly irritating after a while. Try at your own risk, and be sure not to take anything seriously if you want to have any semblance of fun. Final Fantasy 11: It's an MMO, and apparently not a great one, but I've never played it and won't comment. Though I don't like MMOs because few of them do anything decent bar WoW and (from what I've sampled) Age of Conan. Final Fantasy 12: Haven't played too much, but I freaking love the feel and style of the game. It's utterly beautiful. The license board system is kinda nifty too, though the game is a huge timesink. Gameplay is interesting but I found the gambits kinda leave you just autoattacking and healing with little else going on. Maybe that's just me, I'll go back to it eventually. Story was okay, characters were nothing special. Worth a shot. Final Fantasy 13 + VS: It's not out yet, but the whole style of what we've seen of the world so far strikes such a chord with my heart that I will almost certainly be buying it. I want it, really badly, and I only hope it can live up to that and go back to the awesome trends set in the earlier games. Final Fantasy Tactics: Exceedingly difficult and irritating at times, but absolutely fantastic in all ways and shapes at other times. Good job system, good story, reasonable characters. Worth your time. Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced: I actually like this one more than its predecessor for the gameplay, but the story and characters really lack in that department, so it varies. Worth a shot and easily emulated, though. </tl;dr> Summary: 6 and 9 are my favourites, and I also really enjoy most of the games between 4 and 10 inclusive. 5 and 6 are the best for newcomers of the series to sink their teeth into. In short, I play too many video games. |

I've got I - VI emulated on Gameboy (III and VI are the same thing, right?) I also have X, X-2, and XII. And TA. FFX rawked my sawks. I loved it. First FF game I ever played, and it was awesome. X-2 wasn't all that bad. Cool battle system, with some challenging puzzles and boss battles. Fairly good story too. But everyone knows the only reason you get it is because the 3 girls wear skimpy clothing >_> Haven't really gotten into XII yet. Haven't had the time for my PS lately. |

AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGHH-- Wait, wait, no, this is Enro. He's cool, he doesn't mean to hurt you. Deep breaths, Delfeir, deep breaths. *composes self* No. They are not the same game, at all. Don't ever think that for a second. If you browse over my recap of the series, it's safe to assume that 3 and 6 are not, in fact, the same guy. As it turns out, the Americans didn't like RPGs much back in the NES/SNES era, so Final Fantasy 2 and 3 (which were NES) were never actually released in English speaking lands. Thus when the SNES rolled around and FF4 showed up, the Americans were confused as hell, so they decided to call FF4 2 instead. And then they never got FF5... and FF6 came along and they got that one, so they called it 3 to avoid confusion. But they are very, very, VERY different games. If you get FF3 on the DS expecting to get the game which I described as FF6, expect to be immensely disappointed. Of course, they were short-sighted, because it creates confusion now. And it also creates headaches for Delfeir who has to explain it every other day. |
