MASSIVE TEXT WARNING! Well, yesterday a friend of mine called me to play Brawl with him. Now, I rarely hang out with this friend, and exclusively to play Brawl. We've known eachother for a few years now, but we've parted ways, so to speak, and while I got into literature and such, he got into drugs and such. So I always am a tad skeptical on hanging out with him for any reason. However, he's maintained his videogame skills, and me and him are very equal in brawl (And far above the rest of our neighborhood) We're pretty neck and neck, and know eachothers styles very well, and maintain a battle of beating the HELL out of eachother and practicing to get better, mainly using our brawl skills as cannon-fodder to the ongoing philosophical debate of sorts we have between our very different lifestyles. So, he calls me, and he said he'd VS'ed these two kids who wouldn't stop bragging about how amazing they were, and he played a team match with another friend on his side who's not that great, and they were beaten. Harshly. So I find out last minute, that he's been bragging about me all day to these kids, and that everything is on the line and we've GOT to beat them. Meanwhile, I just finished the latest Pendragon book, and my head was in a cluster**** of dizziness from the ending (I was seriously physically addled), and I had a headache, so I text him back saying I don't think I'm up for a Brawl that night. He then calls me, urging me to come brawl these kids, and I take two tylenols, cave, and go to play my favorite videogame...wait, what is WRONG with that sentence? Why was I not looking forward to this? So, I meet him on the corner (he lives about a block away from me), and he starts telling me how these kids have been strategizing all day after hearing about me, and that their mains are Zelda and Pit, and how they couldn't BELIEVE I mained Lucas, because that's just rediculous, and he is clearly a bad character. (Or one hard to use that I use well >.>) So I meet them, we shake hands, I realize I met them once before, but they were high back then, so they didn't remember me. Naturally. We get inside, and sit down. Now, keep in mind, the last time I went to this friends house, he seemed like the forgotten child. His bedroom was one giant flat screen TV (let me finish the sentence here) and a couch. After his parents had another baby, he was shafted to an old family room, and while the TV was kickass, he lived on a ratty couch. Now what happened while I was gone? He now had a brand new bed and desk and set of furniture on top of this TV, and frankly, his room looked better then mine. Cue jealousy. Anyways, the two kids asked who my mains were, I told them I use Sheik, Lucas, Ness, Pit, Meta-Knight, Marth, and Snake. They start to laugh because I'm not focused on one character. What I don't tell them is that that list I gave is in descending order of how often I use my mains, and that the higher up you go, the better I am. So I suppose I lied, because I don't "main" them all. Now then, let's get to the good part. I start the Wii for us, plugging in the two controllers I brought over. These two kids are trash talking me, and me? I'm being modest. I suggest a free-for all, to warm up, as I haven't played in over a month. I decide to use Snake. I tell them I suck at Snake. These guys have no semblance of strategy, and exchange silly grins at my supposed inadequacy. A third kid watching laughs, it's common opinion in this group that Snake is a God-Awful character. Clearly they know nothing of altering your fighting style >.> The match starts. Now, anyone who's visited TV Tropes knows what a magnificent bastard is about. Enrobing them in my own Xanatos Gambit, I of course, focus only on the two concieted newcomers, to get an understanding of their fighting style. You see, they chose their mains for this match. Zelda likes to stay back with supporting attacks like Din's fire, and at one stock left, she'll switch to Sheik and kick some ass in desperation. Pit's the gun-man, running out, weapons blazing, and doing some good fighting. Now, for an interlude, the reason I like using Snake, is because to use Snake, in my mind, is to BE a magnificent bastard. See, he's a little slow, and his smash attacks are HIDEOUSLY slow...But varied. His Up-A sends a bomb into the air to come flying back down, or I can use his Down-A and B to set mines and trip-wires. His forward B is great in the confusion of a free-for-all. And for physical combat, his non-smash attacks are as strong as other characters smashes. 3 taps of the A button will rip through someone. So Snake's all about being tactical, get 15 ft. under someone, and hit them with an Up-A while they're distracted, or use a forward-B in an odd trajectory above them...only to release the missile and have it make a bee-line southward. He's all about predicting enemies movements, and setting up an attack for where they are about to walk. I do this somewhat well, and it just so happens my main skill is my instinct on how others will act/react in a fight, since there strategies are someone basic. Still, Snake is better in a free-for all, where they won't pay you much mind. So, the match goes on, I nail some great attacks, and manage to dodge Pit. This guy never uses Pit's Up-B I notice, he jumps up and then glides, which is interesting because it gives him masterful recovery and still access to the up B for emergencies. I play him quite differently, but that's another story. In the end, I came through like a wrecking ball, finishing the 4-way free for all with 5 kills and 2 remaining stock. Onward to the team battles! I switch to Lucas, my friend takes up the sword with Marth. The other two stay the same, and we move to final destination with no items. Cliche, and personally, I hate the new Final Destination, because 60% of recoveries get nerfed in that infernal new way you can get trapped JUST under the edge that comes out two far, but it's a unanimous vote for an even battle-field. *Sigh* Did I mention I hate this stage? The long-awaited match begins. I remember launching straight to the left and missing, but recovering from my own move easily enough to come out unscathed and begin a real attack, and then the rest of the match is a blur. I quickly PK-Thundered off the edge on accident once, but I did alright. Eventually, it got down to me with 2 stock, and everyone else (teammate included) with 1 stock. I'm good at not dying I suppose. My friend also had a good 100% less then both of them. "We got them right where we want'em now!" he exclaimed. "We had them there when we picked up our remotes," I countered. I'm sorry, but did you hear that line? I felt like SUCH a bad-ass. To wrap things up, I accidently killed myself at the start, and still finished with a 2 stock surplus. We wrecked them hard. In an occasional match, where I'd switch to someone less-used like Meta Knight, and my friend made the mistake to use Dedede for one of the first times ever, we lost once or twice, but easily won three times as many times. One of the kids demanded a one on one against me, convinced he could take me on. The first match I played as Sheik, and for some reason, was strangely wrecked. I redeemed myself in the rematch when I played as Lucas, however, so we agreed on being even in skill, though I think I brought a bit-more flair to my game. My friend and the other guy on the opposing team were at eachother's throats (in a friendly, competitive manner, of course) though, and the other guy refused to admit that he was worse, and attritubed it to severe luck on his part, proclaiming us both as average players, and that if his friend who was as good as he was was here, they'd bulldoze us. Yeah, yeah, enough trash talk. Here, we took leave for the night and departed. I said that I bet his friend was pretty good, and that it'd be fun to play him too, but I was just being facetious to myself at this point. We made friends though, he asked if I watched Bleach or Naruto, or read the manga, which I coincidentally do (though I'm falling behind), and we talked about anime for a little bit. It was a good night. I'm going back to kick some ass as soon as I get out of work >.> |

Great story. It is unfortunate that the only time I can play with human players who own Brawl is by Wifi. That's is why it saddens me a lot when there is lag and stuff. I too hate FD for the killing spot it has. Who said it doesn't have a stage hazard? I SD less from Palkia's reversed controls then that certain spot under FD. Smashville is a better FD for it has no real hazard at all (only has a thin moving platform. I bet FD has that "killing zone" for wall clingers. Too bad Wall Clinging screws me over more then it is being helpful. (Glares at Mushroomy Kingdom 1-2 and the poor Squirtle who got trapped wall clinging and losing a stock). And I despise that I see FD on "With Anyone" over 20 times without a break. It is played so many times it is actually refreshing to see Flat Zone 2 or Rumble Falls. |

Some of the recovery moves just dazzle you on FD, though. Captain Falcon and Wario abused and spammed their up b and bike, respectively, and always came back on whenever I was sure I had them under the stage and surely dead. Instead, I had to resort to absolute knock outs via fully charged smashes, or final smashes, in order to get at them. And since most of them were 5 minute time matches...yeah. >_> It's rediculous. I mean, Snake's up b STAYS UNDER THE DAMN PLATFORM, WHY CAN'T I GO LEFT? Ah well. My fault the other dude managed to get me there in the first place. >_< Also, never, NEVER play as Metaknight on Battlefield, WarioWare, etc. He's designed to stay in the air, since all his b moves can send him back to the stage(yes, even the normal B ), and since he's light, he can stay up there. But that's also where others can knock him out the easiest, so yeah, |
