Come and Take It - Temple Tsundere

Alright, so we all know that I hate Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. For a while now, i've been meaning to type this up: Why FE9 is Bad. #1: Too many prepromoted units early on: Generally, at the start of any FE game, you'll get a Paladin that is really powerful, but tends to peter out near the end. In PoR, you get three in the course of 2 missions: Titania, Shinon, and, to a lesser extent, Gatrie. Shinon brings me to my next point: #2: Your Archers suck in this game: I rarely use my archers in FE games, but in here they reek of awful. Shinon is prepromoted, and a complete douchebag. Likewise, Rolf is a crybaby, something Neimi before him did better. #3: Boyd and Oscar are hard to level early on: Boyd and Oscar could be great units...but you only seem to get them for about two missions involving solely axe users. This gives Boyd a low hit rate and Oscar's lance only tactics make him a target for the Bandits. #4: Ike levels way too quickly: Since the first few missions include a lot of axe-wielders. Since Boyd and Oscar have trouble against them (See #3), Ike is the only unit that can handle the enemies with ease, causing him to dwarf his friends that he fights for. #5: The game holds your hand for the first missions: With all of the prepromoted units you get early on, it's like the game wants you to win. Take Mission 3 (Shinon and Gatrie's first appearance), for example. Shinon/Gatrie pretty much wipe out the docks, and before you can get on the Pirate Ship, Marcia appears and takes on half of the ship herself. #6: Distinct lack of Armories/Vendors: I'm not sure if they appear later, but in all eight chapters i've played, I have not seen a single Armory or Vendor at all. This is making it hard to heal. #7: Lack of units: Maybe it's because the old FEs are better, but i've kinda expected to have more units by Chapter 8. I mean, you've only got six units, whereas you could have about ten in any other game at this point, possibly even twenty. #8: No enemy damage stats: This irks me the second-most: In combat, I can't see how much the enemy will do until they hit me, or if I can take a gamble based on the unit's hit rate. #9: The units are so stiff in combat: Not like that, you sick-minded people. In combat, the units look like robots. It goes like this: Attacker moves, hits the unit, Defender hits, Attacker might hit again, and done. In the GBA Fire Emblems, the battles felt more alive. 10: The mounts don't die: When the cavalier/peg knights die, only the person dies. The mount just kinda sits there like nothing is wrong. 11: So many underleveled units: I know that there's bonus EXP in this game, but come on. So many of your units join severly underleveled, like Mist, Rolf, Marcia, Brom, and Nephenee. 12: Thieves don't promote: As if they weren't bad enough already. >__> 13: Too many douchebag personalities: A lot of characters seem to just hate the world in general. As far as i've gotten, the prime assholes are Shinon, Soren, and Lethe. 14: What did they do to my Myrmidons!?: Myrmidons are crit- obtaining beasts in other FE games, but in PoR, i've only seen Mia crit once. That's not cool. This brings me to my next point: 15: The critical animations suck: I have not seen a single good critical hit animation in this game so far. (Looking DIRECTLY at you here, Myrmidons) 16: They took out the Mercenary unit: There are no units with the Mercenary class in the whole game. The Mercenary was always one of the best classes you would get. Sads. 17: Where is my Dark Magic?: Looking through the list of weapons, I saw about three types of Anima Magic, some Light Magic...but no Dark Magic. Come on. Shaman, Druids and Summoners were great units, and now they're gone, too. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EDIT: Thankfully, I have now come up with some good things about PoR: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mia: She's so damn hilarious. In addition, she's probably the only unit I have that consistently get Double Attacks. Also, she's cute. Ilyana: In my eyes, she's a better Mage than Soren. She also provides the lulz with her gargantuan appetite and cute looks. OM NOM NOM. Nephenee: The first playable soldier ever. She's a trailblazer. Forgable Weapons: Because nothing says pwnage like a crithax, lightweight, highpowered, pink colored Silver Sword named Hellaraep. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's everything I currently find wrong (and right) with Path of Radiance at the moment. |

At #6: After the scene where the Black Knight kills Greil, from then on you are part of a merchant convoy/base where you can buy as much as you need-want in between missions, with no business deals going on in the battles themselves. (IMHO this is much better than shopping during battle and makes much more sense storywise.) Also, in addition to battle experience you gain lots of "bonus" experience which you freely allocate to your weak units during the base segments to make them strong like Ike. And during the base segments is where you trade items and do Supports, and where you can "forge" items so that they have increased accuracy and stuff like that. ^_^ Looking at the rest of your rants, I can kinda tell this is one game you will much more probably like later rather than earlier. |

Don't fret, you'll lose those Prepromos save for Titania soon. And Gatrie is just godly. Like, Oswin godly. Or close to it. You HAVE to be playing on easy though to complain about Ike levelling like a bandit. On normal mode he was barely level 10 by chapter 9. |

To be frank, a lot of what Jackal complains about is the truth... About those first nine-or-so chapters where you aren't part of the merchant convoy, anyway. I loved playing this game three times but probably mainly because I played through the WHOLE thing instead of the first portion where everything's more rigid, and each time I played it the first bunch of chapters were always the least enjoyable. :/ With bonus experience and levels maxing out, Rolf can actually become REALLY good all-around. |

I got farther in PoR (Chaper 12 now, yay), and added some moar things that piss me off. Also, Gatrie is not Oswin godly. No Knight can be Oswin godly. |

Volke promotes later on in response to a story event, while Sothe (the other thief) does not promote at all. And the Dark element returns in Radiant Dawn. I'm starting to swear that some of the things you're not liking about the game, like the initially-underlevelled units, are parts of the kind of game FE9's supposed to be. :/ Oddly enough, Mia's always one of my weakest units and least favorite. |

I didn't get Volke at Chapter 10; I assumed you could get him later in the story. |

Uh-oh... I think you should have looked at a Character FAQ before playing the game. (Having Volke join your party is actually totally free, and later in the story there's a cutscene where you find 50,000 gold whick Ike pays to Volke. If you didn't "hire" him then I don't think you ever will. :( But I never found Volke to be great for combat myself, promoted or otherwise...) And I don't pay any attention to the animations after a while of playing the game, so I have it turned off after a bunch of chapters. Aesthetic things like the mounts not visually dying along with their riders doesn't irk me in the least, personally. Boyd, Oscar, and Nephenee become real good if you give them their levels. Personality wise, Shinon stays like that even after the end of Radiant Dawn, but Soren and Lethe are much more developed even by the end of PoR. IMHO, the two Myrmidons Mia and Zihark aren't so great, but a Swordmaster you can get later on named Stefan is REALLY good. (You NEED to read a character FAQ to get him in the desert mission, though.) |

Sound the horn and call the cry: "How many of them can we make die?"

Even after reading all your complaints, I would play through the game anyway just to see that. |
