First of all, Kyarorain personally impresses me by having gone out of her way to make and head an entire communal subforum about Pokemon here at the Temple. After all, it's altogether likely that I appreciate the overall franchise more than anyone else here at the Temple, so maybe I'm technically better qualified for the position. (Not that I'd want to, I'm rarely online for more than three hours a day)Anyway, what I specifically like about Pokemon are all of its eponymous critters. Yes, I have at least some degree of appreciation for each and every last one of the 493 current ones. My all-time favorites are Grumpig, Glalie, and Mismagius. ![]() Translated into simple English: I LIKE 'EM ALL, ESPECIALLY GRUMPIG AND GLALIE AND MISMAGIUS. |

My personal favorites are Snorlax, Charizard, and Vaporeon. EDIT: I noticed that all of my favorites are generation 1. Coincidence? Probably not. Nostalgia, ftw. |

Obviously there ain't no shame in a nostalgia perspective. ;) I think I'll explain my secret method to appreciating them all easier than what 493 separate creatures might at first seem: I actually consider all Pokemon evolution stages to be merely different forms of what are ultimately the same species, and that there's actually a total of 246 "physical species" throughout the four generations. (e.g. Bulbasaur/Ivysaur/Venusaur count as one physical specie in my POV, Happiny/Chansey/Blissey count together as one, and Eevee/Vaporeon/Jolteon/Flareon/Espeon/Umbreon/Leafeon/Glaceon all count as one multi-form specie in my books, whereas Articuno and Zapdos and Moltres independently count as three separate physical species, and so on.) I think that's definitely a perspective not many people would have of Pokemon, but I've certainly had a great time with it. |

I agree with that perspective. I could say I hold the same position, but really, I've never thought about it too much. Hoenn seems to be my least favorite branch of the critters though. I like the originals best, followed by Gold/Silver, and then Diamond/Pearl. Though as a game I'd say I like Diamond/Pearl best for the AMAZINGNESS that is wifi and has changed the face of Poke-gaming forever. |

Ah, great. That's generally the opinion I would expect from most fans, that generations 1 and 2 are the "high points", gen 3 is the "low point", and that gen 4 is "better". Anyway, in this perspective, gen 1 started the franchise off with 79 physical species. Gen 2 revealed that two of those species belong together (Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan with Tyrogue and Hitmontop), so that number became 78, and it added 51 all-new species added to make 129 total. Gen 3 added 73 more to form 202, and Gen 4 added (only!) 44 more to form a grand total of 246, because it emphasized evolving previous Pokemon (a.k.a. developing existing physical species). Ain't that interesting? =D |

I'd have to agree with Blissy's ranking of the Gen's. And Erik, while I appreciate most of the pokemon, there are some that I just can't stand. Magikarp for one. He's so useless, and Gyrados really isn't worth the trouble. And in every game, there's always a trainer with 6 Magikarps. Said trainer always ticks me off >_> ANother one that bugs me is Zigzagoon/Linoone. The creators must have gotten really unimaginative with him... There are a couple of other pokemon from Gen 3 which strike me as unimaginative and boring, but on the whole, those 2 are the main culprits. |

I like most of them. I don't really have a favorite, but I do have pokemon that I always use in certain games. Like Fearow in RBY. Love that guy. |

Magikarp is supposed to be useless. There was a guy in R/B/Y who would even sell you one for a bunch of money if you were dumb enough and if you talked to him again, he said he didn't do refunds. Lol. I'd hardly call it unimaginative. The fact it's useless is part of the character after all. But, anyway, I do like most of the Pokemon. Bidoof is annoying though. Stupid thing. My favourite is Vulpix. ^_^ |

Bidoof annoys me, along with all the normal type cat-based Pokemon. There must be about 6... And Kricketune. It's all pleh, when Kricketot was really cute. My favourite's gotta be Luxray, I think. |

I don't see anything wrong with Bidoof, personally. I think it succeeds as a creature that's intentionally dimpy looking, and if you look at it and its evo really closely you'll see some pretty good physical design elements involving the shapes on Bidoof's head and Bibarel's tail. I doubt I could design any Pokemon even that well. :/ |

Ky, I didn't say Magikarp was unimaginative, I said he was useless. Bidoof strikes me as one of those generic normal types, the ones you find everywhere. There was Rattata in Gen 1, then Sentret, then Zigzagoon, and finally, Bidoof. For some reason, Zigzagoon annoys me the most out of all of them, though. I mean, I loved Raticate. Hyper/Super Fang FTW! |

In concept? Not having played Gen. IV yet, I can't guarantee that this will end up being entirely accurate, but for the most part, yes. My personal problem? Gen. IV's legendaries simply take it too far. I mean, let's put it in perspective, taking the best example of this. We have Arceus, ultimately the creator of all reality as is known. We have a being of nigh-limitless power, given that it created Dialga and Palkea(who also suffer from this kind of thing, but Arceus is a better example). In short, you're practically talking about the Pokémon world's equivalent of God. IE, omnipotent, omniscient, the works. And you can catch it. That means you can end up fighting the equivalent of GOD, beating it down to where it's barely conscious, and then jam it into a teeny little ball. It just doesn't happen. Period. I don't care about the gameplay perspective on this, I don't care about how it makes a good story. That's simply going too far. Oh yes, I may end up playing Gen. Iv, but make no mistake. As I see it, when you've made it so you can beat down God, you've pretty much killed verisimilitude. And you will not get it back. |

Arceus isn't even all that overwhelmingly powerful anyway, it's just sturdily balanced and swift among legendaries (I say this through physical playing experience; it lacks legendary offensive punch enough that you can't really call it "equivalent to GOD", quite frankly, since Kyogre can pwn it). Now, Arceus'd REALLY be god-like if it lost 30 Atk and gained 30 Special Attack... which means I think the creature's excellently designed from a gameplay perspective. And besides, you could think of it this way; Arceus used to be infinitely more powerful and godlike when the universe started, but used up most of it to create all the other Pokemon and things so that what you're seeing is more of a remnant. (Surely that would refute your concerns somewhat... :/) And hey, maybe the fact there's millions of Arcei allegedly being traded and battled over Wi-Fi is an indication that these are more like offspring, that the REAL Arceus (or whatever entity that actually created the Pokemon universe) is asleep somewhere in the center of the universe and would always remain so. (Doesn't the Pokedex say Arceus used its "thousand arms" to create the universe? )I only see reason to rejoice in being able to both own and pwn a partially divine creature in a Nintendo game.
And I suppose you have similar attitudes with doing the same thing to colossal rock snakes and blue whales? ;) |

I see his point - the creator of the universe shouldn't be able to be beaten/caught. And by saying that it had limitless power, I think he meant that it created the universe and stuff, not that it had really high stats. Which it should anyway, as there's no point in having a high level Pokemon that can beat a legendary. |
