Used to take karate lessons, but that was a long time ago. It would be neat to start up again.

Dante's a big fencer. It seems like a lot of fun, but there's no where I know to try it at.

*raises hand* I am Dante. But yeah, I've been fencing for what, three, four years? Something like that... I'm pretty good, if I do say so myself... on peer with some of the Canada games fencers, but others would whup me solid. Going to the provincials soon, as well. I used to do karate when I was younger, too, and have been heavily considering taking that up. Edit: And a few of the universities up here have fencing teams, as well. I fenced a few of their guys before, they're amazing. |

For fencing? Well, I started with the foil weapon, but that was only because the coach made us... but it really is a good thing to start out with. It's light, easily usable, and it's good for refining your point control for when you get into the later weapons. Not only that, though right-of-way is a pain, it forces you to learn all the bladework quickly (which you'll have to learn anyway, haha). In my area, at least, fencing's divided into three weapons... level 1, Foil. 2, Epee, and 3, Sabre. Anytime, you can stop progressing and choose to focus on weapon... I'm an epeeist, with some foil on the side. Really want to take up sabre sometime, though. However, half of fencing is definitely footwork... if you don't have good footwork, you're bladework will be meaningless, 'cause they'll be dancing all around you. Just check out the local club, and ask for the coach to give you a run-down. |

Found a fencing club in my area. Of course, knowing my luck, I'll never get to go.

I used to do fencing, but I was doing it more to get out of doing some other sport, than any actual interest in fencing. I did it for two years, and didn't compete in a single tournament... And of all the practice bouts I had, I think I only won one... Yeah, I wasn't any good at it, which is why I stopped doing it. I also used to do judo, but none of the moves came naturally to me; I had to think too much about the proper position and technique, and forgot a lot of the stuff I'd learned by the time I had another lesson. So I quit that too >.> |

I'm taking ninjitsu, though I've only been in it for about 2 years now (and still haven't gotten any higher than the third belt). As for fencing, I'd like to learn that or some other form of swordplay. Right now, just about all I know about swordfighting is that you stick the pointy end in the other person (or reasonable sportsmanlike equivalent) to win. |
